32-year-old arrested after body of 53-year-old woman found in shopping bag in Warsaw's Ochota district
Police discovered the decomposing body of a 53-year-old woman hidden in a large shopping bag in a flat in Warsaw's Ochota district over the weekend. A 32-year-old man with a long criminal record was detained the same day and has confessed to the killing.
Discovery of the body
Police officers from the Warsaw III District Police Headquarters entered a flat in the Ochota district over the weekend of 1–2 August 2026 after receiving a report from a concerned woman. The woman, identified as the former partner of the suspect, told officers that the 32-year-old man had warned her not to enter the flat, saying something terrible had happened. Komisarz Jacek Wiśniewski, spokesperson for the Warsaw Metropolitan Police, stated that the woman had not been in the man's flat for about a month. When she met him, he told her she could not return to the flat because "something bad had happened."
Nie wchodź do tego mieszkania, zrobiłem coś okropnego.
Officers forced entry into the flat. The first signs suggesting a crime were numerous bloodstains. Inside, they found a large shopping bag containing the body of a 53-year-old woman in an advanced state of decomposition. Police technicians and a doctor arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. The body was transported to the Department of Forensic Medicine for autopsy.
The suspect and his criminal past
A 32-year-old man, identified as Konrad S., was detained the same day in the Włochy district of Warsaw. Both the victim and the suspect are Polish nationals. According to reports by RMF FM and other outlets, the man confessed to the killing. On Monday, 3 August, he was charged with murder under Article 148 § 1 of the Polish Penal Code. Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba, spokesperson for the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor's Office, confirmed the charge and the confession. A court hearing on his pre-trial detention is scheduled for Tuesday, 4 August.
Konrad S. was already well known to law enforcement. His first recorded detention was in November 2011 at age 17, when he was held at the Służewiec remand centre in Warsaw in connection with an extortion investigation. He spent nearly three months in custody. In early 2016 he served a sentence in Sieradz prison for participation in a beating. In 2020 he spent about six months in pre-trial detention in Suwałki for violating the bodily integrity of a police officer. In 2021 he was again detained at Służewiec, this time for destruction of property. His most recent recorded detention was on 29 September 2023 at the Kłobucka Street remand centre, also for destruction of property. Three further proceedings were recorded in 2022, covering theft, destruction of property, and insulting an officer. In 2025 he was reportedly sentenced for threatening neighbours and left prison in January 2026 after serving several months.
Investigation status
The autopsy was conducted on Monday, 3 August, but the body's advanced state of decomposition means investigators must wait for results to determine the cause and exact time of death. It is not yet clear how long the body had been in the flat before it was found, though one report suggests approximately 10 days. The relationship between the suspect and the victim has not been disclosed by authorities. The motive for the crime and the full circumstances of the woman's death remain under investigation. Evidence is being secured, witnesses are being interviewed, and forensic analyses are ongoing.
Separate discovery in Ciechanów
On the same Saturday, a separate macabre discovery was made in Ciechanów, a city about 100 km north of Warsaw. Residents walking along Płocka Street on the outskirts of the city found a decomposing fragment of a human body near the road. Local news service Ciechanów Inaczej reported the find.
