Roda de Berà wall collapse injures three people after heavy storms hit Tarragona coast
Torrential rainfall triggered a wall collapse on the maritime promenade in Roda de Berà early Saturday, leaving one person in critical condition and two others injured in Tarragona province.
Structural failure on Roda de Berà promenade
A perimeter wall collapsed along the Paseo Marítimo in the coastal municipality of Roda de Berà, in Tarragona province, during the early morning hours of Saturday, 22 August 2026. The incident took place as intense rainstorms swept across the coastal area overnight, leading to heavy water runoff and ground destabilization along the seafront. Emergency services received the first distress call reporting the collapse at 02:09. The falling wall collapsed directly onto the maritime promenade, striking pedestrians who were in the area at the time. Three individuals sustained injuries as a result of the structural failure, prompting an urgent deployment of first responders to secure the perimeter and extract the victims.

Emergency response and medical evacuations
The Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) responded immediately following the 02:09 alert, activating three ambulances and deploying a joint emergency team alongside the Bomberos de la Generalitat. Medical personnel treated the three injured individuals on site before transferring them to medical centres located in the nearby city of Tarragona. Triage evaluations classified one person in critical condition, a second in serious condition, and a third with less serious injuries. Emergency crews transported the two most severely injured patients to the Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII de Tarragona for urgent medical care. Severe rainfall and soil erosion
The structural failure followed hours of torrential rainfall that hit the coastal strip of Tarragona from Friday night into Saturday morning. Rain gauges in Roda de Berà recorded an accumulation of 244 litres per square metre during the weather event. The continuous deluge eroded the terrain behind and beneath the promenade wall, weakening its structural integrity until the masonry gave way. Meteorological authorities had issued a red alert (aviso rojo) for the Tarragona coastline, designating the highest level of meteorological risk due to the severity of the convective rain system and the rapid accumulation of surface water.
Municipal flooding across coastal Tarragona
The heavy downpours that struck Roda de Berà caused flooding across multiple municipalities located along the Tarragona shoreline. Overflowing rainwater affected public streets, coastal infrastructure, and drainage systems across several coastal towns in the province. The Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques confirmed the casualty numbers and emergency actions in a statement published on social network X early Saturday morning. Firefighters from the Bomberos de la Generalitat and local emergency teams continued operational work across the impacted coastal municipalities to inspect damaged structures and clear flooded public spaces following the storm.
