Attack at Brinell School
On Friday, 21 August 2026, an 18-year-old man carrying a sword entered the Brinell School in Fagersta, located about 150 kilometers northwest of Stockholm. The assailant, who reportedly wore a helmet during the incident, attacked multiple students inside the educational facility shortly after the end of the summer holidays. Panic spread across the campus as students ran from the attacker and barricaded themselves inside classrooms while their parents attempted to establish contact.
Student Abdulrahem Salmo described the initial moments of the assault to Swedish broadcaster SVT:
The attacker came up behind one of our classmates and struck him in the arm, which was covered in blood. Then someone called the police and everyone started running because we were afraid.

Investigation and suspect background
The detained 18-year-old suspect is a former student of Brinell School with a documented history of violence and social services intervention. According to court records reported by Dagens Nyheter, he was convicted of assault last year after attacking another student at a previously attended school. He had spent years under the supervision of social services and was previously placed into institutional care under Sweden's Care of Young Persons Act (LVU).
Investigators are also examining digital activity preceding the assault. At 13:41 on Friday, approximately 25 minutes prior to the emergency calls, an image of a sword was uploaded to a TikTok account that had previously shared content glorifying violence and school attacks. The online profile was removed shortly after the incident, while specialized police units conducted searches at several residential addresses linked to the suspect to determine the motive.
