Wagenknecht dares Höcke to live debate after his offer to elect her as Thuringian Minister President

Wagenknecht's challenge

BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht has publicly challenged Thuringian AfD leader Björn Höcke to a live debate, escalating a days-long exchange between the two politicians. In a video posted on X on Sunday evening, Wagenknecht said she had already made Höcke a "very simple offer" days earlier.

She reported having received no response from Höcke and questioned "what is going on with the AfD." Wagenknecht noted that she had previously offered a public duel to AfD co-chair Alice Weidel, who "didn't want to."

Höcke's Thursday offer

The challenge follows Höcke's intervention on Thursday in the BSW's internal dispute in Thuringia. The AfD state leader called on Wagenknecht to have herself elected Minister President of Thuringia with AfD votes, declaring in Erfurt that his faction was ready to act.

Wagenknecht rejected the offer, calling it "neither honest nor serious." She explained that BSW delegates in the Thuringian Landtag would not vote for her due to internal conflicts within the party. Höcke subsequently picked up Wagenknecht's own idea of seeking an independent candidate for the Minister President post.

The counter-proposal

Wagenknecht reiterated her proposal for a non-partisan Minister President for Thuringia, a concept she said Höcke now also supports. She argued that Thuringia needs a credible new head of government who ends what she called the "firewall madness." She proposed the live discussion as a format to discuss this idea and its potential application in Saxony-Anhalt, where she wants the AfD to help remove CDU Minister President Sven Schulze from office.

The Thuringian backdrop

In Thuringia, CDU Minister President Mario Voigt has governed since the 2024 state election in a three-party coalition with the SPD and BSW, but without an absolute majority, relying on parliamentary support from Die Linke. The AfD, classified as confirmed right-wing extremist by the state office for the protection of the constitution, is the largest faction in the Landtag.

The Thuringian state BSW is at odds with Wagenknecht and the federal party because the state association joined Voigt's coalition against the wishes of the federal leadership. This internal conflict is the backdrop to Höcke's offer and Wagenknecht's rejection.

Looking ahead to Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt holds its state election on 6 September. The AfD is polling above 40 percent and is seeking an absolute majority of mandates. The BSW is fighting to enter the Magdeburg Landtag with polling figures of 4 to 5 percent. Wagenknecht argued that with a non-partisan Minister President, the AfD would not need an absolute majority, provided the BSW enters the Landtag.
