Volkswagen replaces the ID.4 and ID.5 with the electric ID. Tiguan from early 2027
The new electric SUV, priced from about 42,700 euros, opens presales on 13 October and reaches customers in early 2027. Its top version is claimed to reach up to 600 km, and an all-wheel-drive version produces 299 hp.
Two electric models replaced by one
Volkswagen will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 with the ID. Tiguan, which reaches customers in early 2027, according to Handelsblatt and Die Welt. Observador reports that the new SUV comes in only one body version, so the ID.5 coupe has no direct successor. Thomas Schäfer, VW brand chief, says the Tiguan is currently the best-selling model of the brand and the whole Volkswagen Group worldwide, with more than 8.3 million built since 2007. The ID.4 and ID.5 together have sold more than 950,000 vehicles since 2021, according to watson and Die Welt. The name change follows Volkswagen's announcement a year ago that it would drop the numbers from its electric model names, starting with the ID. Polo.
Design, size and cabin
The new model adopts the Pure Positive design language and a more upright, SUV-like front, according to El Confidencial. Length figures differ between sources: El Confidencial gives 4.61 metres, while watson and Handelsblatt give 4.62 metres, a few centimetres more than the ID.4. Trunk capacity is 534 to 1,577 litres, and a 32-litre storage compartment under the bonnet, called a frunk, appears for the first time. Electric door handles, which watson says had problems with moisture ingress, are replaced by classic mechanical handles. Inside, a 10-inch driver display and a 15-inch touchscreen sit alongside an optional 12-inch passenger screen, which Die Welt and Handelsblatt describe as a first for a European VW. Physical buttons return for climate and volume, and a retro display option recalls the blue-lit round dials of the Golf IV.
Three versions and claimed range
Volkswagen starts with two battery sizes and three power levels. Handelsblatt reports that the base version pairs a 190 hp rear-wheel-drive motor with a 58 kWh battery for up to 450 km. The 286 hp version with a 77 kWh battery is said to reach up to 600 km, and the 299 hp 4MOTION all-wheel-drive version with the same battery is rated at up to 560 km. Maximum towing capacity is 1,800 or 2,000 kg depending on the battery. Standard equipment includes one-pedal driving, a digital vehicle key and vehicle-to-load power for external devices. LaSexta notes that the 600 km figure is a WLTP homologation value, and that Volkswagen has not yet specified fast-charging performance for each version. Production takes place at the Emden plant.

Sales pressure and the wider strategy
Die Welt reports that Volkswagen's sales are falling, but electric demand in Europe has risen. From January to September, one in five vehicles the group delivered in Europe was a pure electric car, and the electric share of the order backlog was about 40%. The ID. Polo and its sister models, the ID. Cross, Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval, had almost 150,000 orders. Observador says the group is pursuing 100,000 job cuts and the closure of four German plants to recover from a considerable drop in 2025 profits. Observador also says the ID.5 accounted for about 10% of the family's sales in Europe and 20% globally in the first eight months of 2026, so dropping it costs some volume. Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management in Bergisch Gladbach, says e-mobility is moving from niche to mass market and that the Tiguan could be a starting point for Volkswagen's catch-up.
Presale and arrival
Handelsblatt says presales start on 13 October at prices from about 42,700 euros. Die Welt reports that presales in Germany and other European countries begin at the Paris motor show, which opens to the general public on Tuesday. The ID. Tiguan reaches customers in early 2027, and the timeline below sets out the dates reported so far.
