Vinícius Júnior extends Real Madrid contract to 2032, ending Arsenal interest

Real Madrid announced on Thursday that Vinícius Júnior has agreed to extend his contract, keeping the 26-year-old Brazilian winger at the club through June 30, 2032. His previous deal had been due to expire in June 2027, and he had entered its final 12 months. The club did not disclose financial terms, though BBC Sport reported the new agreement comes on improved terms. The extension brings an end to months of speculation over his future, with Premier League champion Arsenal having been heavily linked with a move for the Brazil international. Spanish and British media had reported prolonged contract negotiations between the player and the club, while Arsenal were said to be monitoring the situation and exploring a potential move.

Career in Madrid

Vinícius joined Real Madrid from Brazilian club Flamengo in July 2018 at the age of 18. In eight seasons at the Bernabéu, he has played 375 matches, scored 128 goals, and registered 100 assists. He has won 14 titles during that span: two Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups. The club described his contribution as pivotal due to his gameplay, assists, and goals.

Mourinho factor and a difficult season

The 2025-26 campaign was a tumultuous one for Real Madrid. The club finished runners-up to archrivals Barcelona in La Liga, exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals, and ended the season without a trophy. José Mourinho returned for a second spell as coach in June, and according to Swiss outlet Blick, the 63-year-old Portuguese declared Vinícius indispensable and sees him as a central figure in his squad. Vinícius had hinted at extending his stay during an in-house interview on Tuesday, where he spoke about new manager Mourinho wanting him to be happy and joyful after a difficult spell.

Personal frustrations

The past year also brought disappointment at international level. Brazil suffered a shock last-16 World Cup exit in America last month, eliminated by Norway, adding to a frustrating 12-month period for Vinícius. Despite those setbacks, the former Flamengo player expressed his commitment on Instagram.

Tying down Vinícius represents another step in an active transfer window for Real Madrid.
