Carabinieri arrest 37-year-old driver after fatal hit-and-run of cyclist in Viareggio

Collision on the Lombardi overpass

Italian Carabinieri have arrested a 37-year-old Moldovan national following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Viareggio that killed 46-year-old cyclist Linda Martinucci. The collision occurred around 3:00 AM on 11 September along the descent of the Lombardi overpass, located between Torre Matilde and Largo Risorgimento near the city centre. Martinucci was cycling alongside her partner when an Opel commercial van overtook an automobile travelling behind the couple. As the van cut abruptly back into the traffic lane at high speed, it struck Martinucci's bicycle with heavy force, hurling her several metres across the roadway. Her partner, who was riding directly beside her, escaped without physical injuries. The driver of the van immediately accelerated and fled the scene without stopping to offer assistance.

Emergency response and initial investigation

Following the impact, Martinucci's partner, the driver of the overtaken car, and several bystanders called emergency dispatch at 112 at 2:57 AM. Witnesses noted the registration plate of the fleeing vehicle before it disappeared from view. An emergency medical vehicle reached the crash site in five minutes at 3:02 AM, where paramedics found Martinucci suffering from extensive internal haemorrhaging and severe traumatic injuries. Responders initiated emergency resuscitation and placed her into an ambulance for urgent transfer to the local emergency room. Martinucci suffered cardiac arrest during transit and died before reaching the hospital despite continuous resuscitation attempts by medical personnel.

Interrogations and detention at Pistoia prison

Using the registration details recorded by witnesses, Carabinieri quickly traced the Opel van and seized the vehicle for forensic examination. The registered owner was questioned and cleared of any involvement after explaining that the van had been loaned to a group of Moldovan nationals living in Viareggio. Officers detained two Moldovan men who were inside the vehicle during the crash and subjected them to breathalyser testing. Initial reports suggested three occupants, but investigators established that only two individuals were on board. Both suspects initially refused to reveal who had been operating the vehicle. Following hours of interrogation coordinated by public prosecutor Antonio Mariotti, alongside the review of municipal surveillance camera footage, Carabinieri identified the 37-year-old suspect as the driver. Prosecutors ordered his transfer to the prison in Pistoia on charges of vehicular homicide and fleeing the scene, citing a flight risk, while the 33-year-old passenger was charged with failure to render aid.

Social media tributes on family birthday

Martinucci, a resident of Viareggio, was killed on the date of her daughter's birthday. Just hours before the collision, shortly after midnight, she had published a message on social media dedicated to her daughter alongside a photograph of a birthday cake.

Best wishes, mother's love, you are my life: I love you.

Her daughter later published an online message expressing grief over the sudden loss of her mother. The Carabinieri investigation concluded that both occupants of the van were staying in Viareggio without formal residency status.
