Veștea delays cabinet list again, pledges Thursday submission; USR and AUR refuse to vote
Romanian prime minister-designate Adrian Veștea said on Wednesday evening he would submit his government programme and list of ministers to Parliament on Thursday morning, after twice missing earlier self-imposed deadlines. The opposition parties USR and AUR have already declared they will not vote for the government, leaving Veștea’s PSD-led coalition short of a clear parliamentary majority.
Finalising the programme
After missing a Tuesday pledge and then failing to act on Wednesday, designated prime minister Adrian Veștea announced on Facebook that his team is in the final stage of drafting the government programme. The post came on Wednesday evening, shortly after the deadline he had set earlier that day passed without a submission. Veștea promised the documents would reach Parliament on Thursday morning, 18 June.
We are in the final stage of finalizing the government program. Each measure is analyzed responsibly from the perspective of budgetary impact, so that we respect the assumed deficit targets and present a realistic, applicable and sustainable plan.
Budgetary constraints and social balance
The premier-designate stressed that every proposal is being evaluated against the state’s fiscal possibilities. The core objective, he wrote, is to find the right balance between society’s real needs and the available public resources. Deficit targets agreed with the European Union remain a binding constraint, and Veștea described the emerging plan as “realistic, applicable and sustainable.”
- Veștea says he will submit the cabinet list and programme to Parliament.
- No documents arrive; on Wednesday evening he announces a Thursday morning submission.
- Scheduled submission of the government programme and list of ministers.
Opposition digs in
Even before Veștea’s announcement, the Save Romania Union (USR) had decided unanimously in its Political Committee not to vote for the Veștea government. Shortly afterward, AUR spokesman Petrișor Peiu confirmed that the far-right party’s MPs would also oppose the cabinet. Calculations cited by G4Media indicate that without AUR support, the PSD-led government cannot reach the required majority, despite having the backing of President Nicușor Dan.
Call for responsibility
In his Facebook message, Veștea struck a note of urgency and appealed for an end to political wrangling.
I am confident that Romania will soon have a functional Government, capable of ensuring stability, predictability and concrete solutions for citizens. Fewer egos and political disputes! More responsibility! More work for Romania!
The Thursday morning submission is now the next milestone in a formation process that has already seen two missed deadlines, with the ultimate vote in Parliament still contingent on cross-party support that is not yet in sight.
