Sporting president Frederico Varandas defends sweeping squad overhaul as 'part of the cycle' with over 100 million euros spent

Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas delivered a robust defence of the club's busy summer transfer window on Saturday, describing the departure of influential first-team players as a planned and necessary part of the club's long-term strategy. Speaking to journalists outside the Pavilhão João Rocha in Lisbon before the club's General Assembly, Varandas argued that the club is not entering a new era but executing a recruitment plan designed to build a core group for the next three to four seasons.

Departures and arrivals

Varandas confirmed the exits of several 'world-class' players, including Viktor Gyokeres, Pedro Porro, Francisco Trincão, and Morten Hjulmand. Trincão moved to Saudi club Al Ahli, while Hjulmand joined Atletico de Madrid. The president thanked both players, stating that granting their departures was 'only fair' given the good proposals the club received. In an apparent slip, Varandas initially included Pedro Gonçalves and Ousmane Diomande in a list of departed stars before correcting himself, stating 'Pote is here, Diomande is here.'

Financial might and market position

Addressing criticism over the transfer fees obtained for Hjulmand and Trincão, Varandas pushed back forcefully. He claimed that, with the sole exception of internal trading within the Premier League, he does not see any clubs outside that market achieving higher transfer revenues than Sporting. More than 100 million euros have been spent on new signings, and the president confirmed further moves are likely before the window closes. The financial capacity for this rebuild, he noted, stems from several consecutive years of profit at the club's sports corporation (SAD).

Except for the Premier League's internal market, I don't see any better sales than ours to the outside. Considering the age and position of the players, it was only right to let them go.

Managerial backing and trophy ambitions

Varandas dismissed suggestions that the extensive investment places added pressure on head coach Rui Borges, stating the club has a plan and will stick to it. Asked about Borges's margin for error following the heavy spending, the president briefly replied that Sporting 'has a plan and will deliver it.' He expressed strong confidence that the new squad will compete for trophies, insisting that while the departing group won many titles and gave the fans joy, the incoming group is strong enough to place the club directly in title contention.

This was a group that won a lot, gave a lot of joy and will be forever in the history of Sporting. But now it is time to prepare not just this season, but the next three or four years, and a strong group is coming that we believe will put Sporting where it must be — in the fight and the decisions for titles.

Financial results and assembly agenda

Varandas's comments came ahead of a General Assembly where members are set to vote on the 2024–25 consolidated accounts. According to documents seen by Record, the Sporting Group posted a consolidated profit of 23.308 million euros for the 2024–25 financial year, a decrease from the 36.382 million euros recorded in the previous season. The president urged strong member turnout, describing the day as an important starting point for the season which also includes the Cinco Violinos Trophy match against Monaco. Varandas said he hoped for a 'happy kick-off' with members approving the budget and the team beginning another great season.
