
Valve launches Steam Frame standalone VR headset starting at $1,059
The standalone spatial device features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, eye tracking, and a native ARM64 port of Half-Life: Alyx, using a reservation lottery ahead of shipments on 18 September 2026.
Pricing and rollout schedule
Valve has unveiled its standalone Steam Frame virtual reality headset, setting pricing at $1,059 (£889 / €1,049) for the 256GB base model and $1,299 (£1,089 / €1,279) for the 1TB version. Both configurations ship with two motion controllers and a native ARM64 port of the 2020 game Half-Life: Alyx. The pricing puts the hardware well above entry-level consumer headsets, matching the $1,000 launch price of the wired Valve Index from 2019 while exceeding Meta's $600 Quest 3 and $350 Quest 3S.
To manage initial inventory, Valve opened a reservation window for existing Steam store customers that runs until 10:00 PT on 17 September 2026. A one-time randomization will allocate buyers to either a confirmed reservation queue or a waitlist. The company plans to send the first purchase invitations on 18 September 2026, granting selected buyers a 72-hour window to complete their transactions.

Hardware specifications and optical design
The Steam Frame operates as a standalone spatial computer and wireless PC streaming terminal, running on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor paired with 16GB of RAM. The headset features dual LCD pancake lenses delivering 2,160 by 2,160 pixels per eye, operating at refresh rates between 72Hz and an experimental 144Hz. Internal eye-tracking cameras enable foveated rendering, concentrating graphical compute power directly on the user's focal point.
The chassis weighs 440 grams (just under one pound), rising to 469 grams with an optional top head strap attached, compared to 515 grams for the Meta Quest 3. Valve distributed the device's mass by placing the 21.6Wh battery pack at the rear of the head harness, offsetting the optical assembly at the front. Storage can be expanded beyond the internal flash memory using an integrated microSD card slot.
Software ecosystem and standalone performance
At release, the platform supports 130 verified titles in the Steam Frame library. The device runs native Linux-on-Arm software, emulates Windows games, and uses a compatibility layer called Lepton to execute applications developed for Android-based headsets. It also includes an integrated Gamepad mode for displaying standard 2D PC games on a virtual flat screen.
Porting Half-Life: Alyx to ARM64 required a year of engineering within Vulkan drivers and SteamVR, relying on foveated rendering to maintain full desktop asset geometry without graphical decimation. In addition to local processing, the headset connects to PCs via an included wireless dongle, with streaming support for Valve's Steam Machine scheduled for a future update.

Accessory options and commercial positioning
Valve is offering several optional add-ons at launch, including an Ergonomic Accessories Kit for $59 (£59 / €69), an Accessory Replacement Kit for $49 (£49 / €59), and a 45W-capable power adapter for $29 (£29 / €39). Third-party hardware partners are introducing compatible equipment, including the $149 Arcturus Vision RGB passthrough camera and prescription lenses manufactured by Zenni Optical.
The premium pricing reflects wider cost pressures across the semiconductor sector, where components such as system memory saw price increases exceeding 100% between October 2025 and early 2026. Industry analyst Christopher Dring placed the release in the context of hardware economics across the sector.
VR today is ultimately a high-end niche.
Valve will continue fulfilling reservations in sequential batches as production units become available.
