Spanish court suspends eviction of Valencia university physicist for 10 days after protest

Mobilization halts eviction in Burjassot

More than 100 people gathered on Wednesday morning outside an apartment building in Burjassot, located 10 kilometres from Valencia, to prevent the court-ordered eviction of Daniel González. The demonstration was organized by the Sindicat d'Habitatge de València and brought together local residents, housing activists, and academic colleagues. Local and National Police officers took up positions around the building without deploying anti-riot units or closing adjacent streets. When the judicial commission arrived at the site, officials met with police, union representatives, and González to formalize the situation. Following discussions, the commission signed an official document suspending the eviction for 10 days, granting a temporary reprieve.

Ownership transfer and disputed payments

González, a 38-year-old physicist born in Tarragona, moved into the Burjassot apartment as a student in 2009 under a lease agreement that included an option to purchase the property for approximately €70,000. Problems arose after the original owning company entered insolvency proceedings, leading to mortgage foreclosure and the transfer of the asset to banking entities and investment fund Coral Homes S.L. In January 2018, the bankruptcy administrator instructed González to stop paying rent into the court account. Between January 2018 and February 2020, González had no active landlord bank account to which he could remit payments, leading him to file voluntary jurisdiction claims to force the new owners to accept his rent.

Court ruling and financial claims

González previously secured two favorable court rulings affirming the validity of his rental contract and his legal right to purchase the property. Despite these rulings, Coral Homes S.L. and the current property owner initiated legal proceedings against him. In March 2026, the court in Paterna ordered his eviction from the apartment and ordered him to pay €35,620.88 in overdue rent. González stated that the court dismissed his formal appeals and ignored documentation showing his prolonged efforts to obtain account details to pay the monthly rental fees.

Academic support and legal response

Directors and colleagues from the Instituto de Física Corpuscular, a research institute associated with the Universitat de València where González develops satellite technology, joined the protest outside his residence. His research supervisors commended his academic background, pointing to his receipt of the university's Extraordinary Doctorate Award for his doctoral thesis. Although González noted that he has alternative living arrangements available with his parents or his partner, he confirmed that he will use the 10-day period to work with his lawyer on additional judicial appeals. The Sindicat d'Habitatge de València stated that it plans to explore every legal mechanism before the suspension expires.

Unfortunately, there are many people who cannot fight in this way. We have to keep protesting because this is unfair. I hope things change so that no one else has to go through this, so that no one with a legal lease with an option to buy has to endure an investment fund throwing them out of their home. We will continue fighting.
