Deployment announcements in Vilnius and New York

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced on 22 September 2026 that a new contingent of United States troops is traveling to Lithuania. Speaking on social media, Nausėda expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump and the American administration for authorizing the deployment. On the same day, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna confirmed in New York at the 81st United Nations General Assembly that Washington had also decided to resume troop rotations to Estonia. Tsahkna stated that the size of the Estonian contingent would be close to previous levels, with technical details to follow. Lithuanian officials noted their incoming contingent would match or exceed earlier rotations of up to 1,000 soldiers, while Portuguese reports pointed to a potential force of around 1,500 troops.

Pentagon force posture review

The resumption follows a three-month gap in the American presence on the Baltic flank. In June 2026, roughly 1,000 American soldiers completed their tour and departed Lithuania without an immediate replacement force taking over their positions. That departure occurred while the Pentagon conducted a comprehensive review of American military deployments across Europe. On 18 September 2026, Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus Grynkewich attended a formal briefing evaluating US European force levels. Tsahkna pointed out that while President Trump had publicly discussed troop drawdowns from Germany in the spring, the actual pause in rotations had impacted Poland and the Baltic nations instead. Tsahkna emphasized that while Washington plans strategic adjustments, European allies must coordinate closely to ensure no defensive voids emerge.

Equipment and rotational history at Pabradė

American ground forces have maintained rotational deployments in Lithuania since 2019, transitioning to continuous rotations following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Previous contingents brought heavy armor and artillery to the training grounds at Pabradė. On 30 January 2025, two battalions from the US 3rd Infantry Division, consisting of the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment and the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment, arrived in Pabradė for a nine-month rotation. Military records from 29 January 2026 later recorded live-fire drills at the site involving the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division, operating M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks. Allied training in Lithuania also includes periodic deployments from other NATO members, including Portuguese Navy Special Forces.

Regional security and Baltic defense

Lithuania shares borders with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, making American deployments central to eastern flank deterrence. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that the decision demonstrates allied unity, emphasizing that Lithuania provides advanced training infrastructure while allocating 5% of its gross domestic product to defense. Tsahkna stressed that NATO members must view the eastern flank from Finland to Poland as a unified operational theater. Estonian intelligence agencies currently report no troop movements across the border that would indicate preparations for a major Russian offensive, though officials remain prepared for hybrid provocations. Tsahkna noted that Baltic societies are resilient against hybrid tactics because they understand Russian methods, whereas such efforts tend to cause greater concern in larger western nations.
