US Vice President JD Vance confirmed on 3 September 2026 that the United States military opened an in-depth investigation into an airstrike in southern Iran. “I would say that Iranian state media have not really provided a reliable account of what has happened in this conflict so far, so I am extremely skeptical about this.”

Vance added that the military conducts reviews to adjust procedures if operational errors occurred during the strike.

“We are investigating the matter because, obviously, it is important to us. We want to know what happened and, if we made mistakes, our military learns from them to try to improve.”

Casualties and evidence from the Sirik strike

Iranian officials stated that the Tuesday airstrike in Sirik killed four people, identifying the deceased as two women and two children, while leaving at least 68 people injured. Visual evidence circulated across Iranian media showing wedding party decorations and personal belongings scattered among debris and blood in the damaged structure. An analysis of social media recordings, witness statements, and military expert assessments published by The New York Times determined that the destruction resulted from an American strike. The incident occurred during broader aerial bombardments overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday across five provinces, which killed at least 19 people, including seven members of the armed forces.

Iranian military response and regional escalation

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Ahmad Vahidi vowed that Tehran would avenge the victims of the wedding strike. On Thursday, Iranian armed forces launched missile and drone strikes against the Ahmad al-Jaber air base in Kuwait. According to an Iranian military statement, the attack targeted satellite communications infrastructure, equipment warehouses, and fighter aircraft hangars used by US forces stationed at the installation. Kuwaiti authorities condemned the bombardment against the base as an ignoble aggression. In addition, Iranian authorities announced on Thursday that six navy personnel died in separate US strikes in the region.
