Retaliatory strikes on Iranian tankers
On 5 September 2026, the United States military conducted airstrikes that disabled or destroyed three Iranian oil tankers in the Persian Gulf region. United States Central Command stated that the operation was launched in response to unprovoked ballistic missile attacks by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against two American warships patrolling in international waters. The targeted American vessels, an aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer, evaded the strikes without taking damage, and no American personnel were injured. Centcom identified the three oil tankers as assets within a multibillion-dollar shadow fleet utilized by Tehran to circumvent naval blockades and finance the Revolutionary Guards and affiliated regional militant groups. Iranian state media and the Revolutionary Guard-affiliated Tasnim news agency confirmed that a morning strike occurred off the coast of Kharg Island, noting that the incident caused no casualties.
Distribution of strikes across key waterways
The American military strikes were directed at three separate locations across Iran's maritime energy export corridor. One crude oil carrier was permanently disabled off the coast of Kharg Island, located roughly 30 kilometers off the northern Iranian mainland in the Persian Gulf, where nearly all of the country's crude oil exports are processed. A second tanker was permanently disabled farther south near the port city of Jask, situated east of the Strait of Hormuz. In the Gulf of Oman, American forces completely destroyed a third tanker that was carrying no crude oil, after first instructing the crew to evacuate the vessel. Centcom subsequently released video footage showing plumes of black smoke and fire rising from the stricken vessels.
“If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost by taking out three of yours.”
“If Iran shoots at our ships, we will destroy their oil tankers. All they have to do is stop shooting.”

Resumption of hostilities in the Strait
The strikes renewed direct military confrontation following a relative decline in military exchanges during August. The broader conflict originated in late February 2026 with a combined American and Israeli offensive against Iran, leading to an American naval blockade of Iranian ports and subsequent disruptions to commercial navigation. Armed exchanges escalated again on 30 August 2026, when American forces launched operations to prevent the deployment of rockets carrying naval mines into the Strait of Hormuz. As the United States Navy continued to assist commercial vessels navigating along an authorized southern corridor near the coast of Oman, Tehran sought to enforce restrictions on transit through the waterway. American officials cautioned that further attacks against naval patrols would result in the systematic destruction of Iran's exposed maritime transport assets.
“We will not hesitate to defend American forces and, if necessary, destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet.”
Iranian threats and maritime retaliation
Following the destruction of its tankers, Iranian military authorities initiated counter-operations and pledged harsher responses against American naval forces in the region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on its official Telegram channel that its naval forces had targeted three oil tankers navigating unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz, alongside three additional vessels affiliated with the United States in other maritime sectors. Iran's central joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, issued a formal warning demanding an immediate end to naval blockades and vessel interdictions. Iranian officials warned that continued operations against Iranian shipping would trigger wider military strikes across the regional theatre.
“The American terrorist military is warned that if malicious acts, insecurity, and harassment of Iranian ships as well as the naval blockade of Iran continue, strikes by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran against American military vessels in the region will be harder than before and could expand.”
