Outbreak declared over after thousands fall ill
United States health authorities declared on 11 September 2026 that the multistate cyclospora outbreak linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce has concluded. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed 12,883 infections, 570 hospitalizations, and two deaths across 21 states. Infections were concentrated heavily in the Midwest, led by Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Both recorded fatalities occurred in Michigan, which logged the highest total case count. Federal regulators confirmed that all recalled produce has been removed from grocery shelves and restaurant inventories, with new daily cases falling from more than 1,000 at the peak to fewer than two per day in August.

Supply chain tracing and recall actions
Federal investigators detected the first cluster of illnesses in mid-June 2026, focusing early inquiries on fresh ingredients served at Taco Bell locations. That chain temporarily removed selected fresh produce items from its menu before broader supply chain tracing identified Taylor Farms as the distributor. The company had sourced iceberg lettuce from agricultural fields in central Mexico. On 17 July 2026, Taylor Farms issued a recall covering packaged salad products and shredded lettuce shipped to retailers and restaurant chains across the country, including Yum Brands subsidiaries Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut.
Food safety specialists noted that the microscopic, spherical parasite spreads through human fecal matter, pointing to potential contamination routes in agricultural water or soil. Ellen Shumaker, director of outreach for the Safe Plates food safety program at North Carolina State University, described the mechanism of transmission.
This contamination can happen if produce is grown in soil or comes into contact with water that has been contaminated.
Surge in nationwide parasitic infections
The lettuce outbreak accounted for the largest share of a broader summer surge in cyclospora infections across the United States. Warm and humid summer conditions routinely foster cyclospora cases, but the 2026 figures far exceeded normal seasonal baselines. Between 1 May and 31 August 2026, public health laboratories confirmed 19,595 cases nationwide, alongside more than 6,100 suspected illnesses. That volume was more than sixteen times the 1,180 cases recorded during the same four-month window in 2025, and surpassed the previous annual peak of about 4,700 cases recorded in 2019.

Cyclospora cayetanensis causes gastrointestinal illness, most commonly frequent watery diarrhea with explosive bowel movements. Additional symptoms include stomach cramps, loss of appetite, bloating, nausea, gas, extreme tiredness, and weight loss. Symptoms typically appear one week after consuming contaminated food or water, with incubation periods ranging from two days to two weeks. Health agencies noted that total actual infections likely exceeded confirmed figures because individuals who recover without clinical care rarely submit laboratory samples for testing.
International inspections and pending laboratory results
The Food and Drug Administration stated that its formal inquiry remains open while specialists evaluate agricultural supply chains. Agency inspectors completed on-site reviews and collected samples at growing fields and processing facilities in central Mexico in coordination with Mexican authorities. Laboratory testing on those agricultural samples remains in progress, and the FDA pledged to release updates as findings develop.
Federal inspection frequencies of international food facilities have faced scrutiny during the response. Data from the Government Accountability Office indicated that the FDA is tasked with inspecting more than 19,000 foreign food sites each year, but reached a maximum of 1,700 inspections in 2019. The FDA did not conduct on-site inspections at the implicated Mexican farms until approximately one month after opening its formal outbreak investigation.
