US redeploys 12 B-1 bombers from UK base to domestic stations following terror investigation
The United States has withdrawn 12 B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire following the arrest of six individuals in connection with a suspected plot targeting the military installation.
Bomber withdrawal from RAF Fairford
The United States Air Force completed the repatriation of 12 B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on 4 October 2026. A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that all bomber aircraft stationed at the base, situated approximately 160 kilometres west of London, returned to their home stations across the continental United States. Aviation tracking groups, including the Military Air Tracking Alliance, observed the departures throughout Sunday, with at least three aircraft landing at their home base in South Dakota. The rapid departure occurred after United States and allied intelligence services received specific warnings regarding threats against the military facility. Officials familiar with the flight movements indicated that several aircraft departed before full aerial refuelling arrangements were established, reflecting the urgency of the repositioning.
Counter-terrorism investigation
The redeployment followed an extensive investigation conducted by UK Counter Terrorism Policing across two separate incidents. On 27 September 2026, officers arrested five British nationals in their mid-20s after locating three suspicious vans near the perimeter of the Gloucestershire base. A subsequent forensic search recovered quantities of petrol inside the vehicles, but investigators identified no assembled explosive devices. On 1 October 2026, counter-terror detectives arrested a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian citizen in central London under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. All six individuals were subsequently released on bail while inquiries continued.
Senior counter-terrorism co-ordinator Vicki Evans explained the parameters of the multi-agency police response.
The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry.
Evans added that investigators are reviewing all potential lines of inquiry, specifically including possible foreign state involvement.
Intelligence and diplomatic friction
On 30 September 2026, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated during a broadcast interview that authorities held strong indications linking Iran to the plot. Tehran rejected the allegations as baseless and summoned the British ambassador in protest, while previously maintaining that foreign bases supporting operations against Iranian territory constitute legitimate military targets. On 1 October 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli intelligence services provided the United Kingdom with operational warnings concerning the threat. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio also identified the presence of a foreign actor, while President Donald Trump stated that the plotters intended to inflict substantial damage on military assets.

Context of the aerial campaign
RAF Fairford had hosted American bombers after former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer granted authorization for defensive strikes against Iranian positions. Those operations targeted missile launch sites responsible for strikes against commercial and naval vessels in the Strait of Hormuz since fighting began on 28 February 2026. British security officials previously noted that Tehran-aligned networks had conducted arson and intimidation operations across Europe, prompting concerns about potential retaliatory strikes against British infrastructure. On 3 October 2026, President Donald Trump commented on future military options before departing Washington for an appearance in Ohio.
We have decisions to make regarding Iran. Iran has been decimated. So the only question is whether it will be the easy way or the hard way.
