Uruguay crash out of World Cup 2026 after group-stage disaster and dressing-room crisis
Uruguay failed to win a single match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing behind Spain and surprise package Cape Verde in Group H. The exit follows open conflict between players and coach Marcelo Bielsa and an error-strewn finale against Spain.
The group-stage collapse
Uruguay arrived in Group H alongside European champions Spain, debutants Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia and were widely expected to advance. Their campaign never ignited. A 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in the opening match left them on the back foot after a lifeless first half, rescued only by a Maxi Araújo goal. Goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais repeatedly frustrated the Celeste attack.
Cape Verde shock and tactical discord
In the second fixture Uruguay were held 2-2 by Cape Verde, a result that stunned followers. Kevin Pina opened the scoring with a long-range free kick and Hélio Varela equalised after Maxi Araújo had again been the Uruguayan spark with a goal and an assist. The draw left Uruguay in a perilous position before the final group game against Spain. Tensions inside the camp boiled over in the hours before that match, with senior players Federico Valverde, Sergio Rochet, Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur confronting Bielsa over excessively demanding training sessions that had caused injuries and over his insistence on possession-based tactics. The group favoured a low block instead.
Muslera error and Spain defeat
Spain eliminated Uruguay with a 1-0 win at the Estadio de Guadalajara. The decisive moment came shortly before half-time when goalkeeper Fernando Muslera fumbled a soft shot from Álex Baena, the ball trickling over the line. Muslera asked to be substituted at the interval and later apologised publicly.
I never imagined suffering so much for this sport, especially after all the work I did and the way I prepared.
Bielsa takes the blame
After the loss Marcelo Bielsa was emotional and blunt. In a flash interview he shouted at a production delay and in the press conference accepted full responsibility.
Defender Mathías Olivera called the outcome a disappointment and José María Giménez apologised to the fans. What I leave to Uruguayan football is nothing. A coach who spends three years in a country and does not get results cannot say he made a contribution.
Federation sanctions and journey home
The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) cancelled the team’s private flight back from the United States, according to journalist Martin Charquero. Each of the 26 players will have to book and pay for his own commercial ticket home or to club duty, potentially delaying pre-season arrivals. The move came straight after the elimination and deepened the sense of a squad in disarray.
