Manchester United fall 1-0 to Wrexham in Helsinki as Andrey Santos makes debut
Michael Carrick's side began their 2026-27 preparations with a defeat in Finland, where new £48m signing Andrey Santos caught the eye.
Santos debut
Manchester United opened their 2026-27 pre-season with a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Wrexham at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium on Saturday, in front of 20,069 spectators. The match came 55 days after United closed the previous campaign with a 3-0 win over Brighton. Manager Michael Carrick was without several World Cup participants, including Bruno Fernandes, new signing Youri Tielemans, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez, but still fielded a strong XI. The headline inclusion was Andrey Santos, the 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder who joined from Chelsea earlier in the week for an initial £48m. Santos partnered Mason Mount in a 4-2-3-1 and made an immediate impression, racing back to clear a dangerous Wrexham attack inside the opening 90 seconds. Carrick had spoken warmly about the new arrival before kick-off.
He's a fantastic character. He's settled in so quickly and he's buzzing to be here.
Santos was United's standout performer, comfortable dropping deep to collect from the centre-backs and covering wide areas when Wrexham threatened. His reading of the game and passing range gave United a platform that the attack could not exploit.
Wrexham's winner
The only goal arrived six minutes before half-time. Lewis O'Brien drove down the left and delivered a low cross that appeared to slip through Harry Maguire's legs, leaving Sam Smith unmarked to tap in from close range past Tom Heaton. Smith had earlier headed against his own crossbar while defending a United corner in the 36th minute. United's best first-half chance fell to Joshua Zirkzee, who flashed a shot wide in the 24th minute after being played in. The Dutch striker, deployed as the central forward, struggled to impose himself and was often disconnected from the wide players. Luke Shaw's cross just after the half-hour mark found no one in the box, with Zirkzee several steps behind the penalty spot.
Youth movement after the break
Carrick made 10 changes at half-time, sending out a side composed almost entirely of academy products. Wrexham also rotated heavily, with only Aaron James remaining from the first half, and introduced experienced heads like Conor Coady and Kieffer Moore. United dominated possession but created little until Ethan Wheatley forced Danny Ward into a save from Harry Amass's cross in the 78th minute, the team's first shot on target. Shea Lacey later tested Ward with a low drive. Ayden Heaven, who started the match, was one of the brighter defenders, recovering from an early error with a crunching tackle inside the area and showing composure on the ball. Wrexham threatened sporadically, with Davis Keillor-Dunn drawing a save from Radek Vitek.

What's next
United continue their pre-season schedule on 24 July against Norwegian side Rosenborg. Carrick will hope to have some of his World Cup contingent back in the fold by then, though the tournament final on Sunday may delay returns. The defeat, while inconsequential, highlighted familiar issues in the final third and gave Santos an encouraging first run-out in red.
