Ukraine plans 1,000 daily drone strikes on Russia as military prioritizes air operations

Expansion of long-range drone strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday that the Ukrainian military has set a target of launching 1,000 long-range drones into Russian territory each day. The announcement followed a session with the military command and the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. Ukraine currently deploys an average of approximately 300 to over 300 uncrewed aerial vehicles across the border per day. Zelensky framed the expanded strikes as long-range sanctions aimed at degrading Russian capabilities, describing the 1,000-drone figure as an attainable goal. Ukrainian authorities did not release a formal schedule for achieving the target, nor did they disclose the technical specifications or models of the uncrewed systems involved.

Infrastructure targets and defensive adjustments

Ukrainian aerial attacks have focused on fuel industry facilities located both along the border and deep within the Russian interior. Starting in mid-July, Ukrainian forces broadened these strikes to encompass logistics centers, including facilities belonging to the Wildberries distribution network. Ukrainian officials designate these commercial logistics networks as valid military objectives due to their role in supporting Russian armed forces during the full-scale conflict, which has lasted for more than four years. In addition to offensive operations, the military leadership prioritized increasing the domestic manufacture of weaponry to intercept Russian strikes, focusing particularly on countering Russian jet-powered Shahed drones. The emphasis on aerial warfare aligns with assessments Zelensky shared in early July, when he stated that the decisive arena of the war had transitioned from ground and maritime combat to the skies.

Conscription requirements and defense leadership

While drone output remains a central focus of Ukraine's strategy, Ukrainian officials acknowledged that uncrewed systems cannot fully address the armed forces' manpower deficits. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Office of the Ukrainian President, stated in a televised interview broadcast on Friday that the military requires a minimum intake of 30,000 mobilized personnel every month to maintain its current defensive lines. Budanov explained that altering recruitment techniques or conscription protocols would not produce a meaningful change in draft numbers. He also observed that the recent appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as defense minister is unlikely to alter the overall monthly scale of mobilization.

You cannot mobilize fewer than 30,000 people per month. That is the minimum number necessary to maintain the current state.

United States intelligence briefings in Moscow

The strategic announcements coincided with diplomatic consultations between Kyiv and Washington. On Friday, Zelensky confirmed that the United States administration briefed Ukrainian officials regarding meetings held in the Russian capital earlier in the week. CIA Director John Ratcliffe travelled to Moscow on Tuesday to conduct talks with Russian representatives. Commenting on the American communication, Zelensky expressed support for Washington's engagement and stated that international pressure must compel the Kremlin to conclude the conflict.
