UK Navy intercepts Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in first Channel operation
Royal Marines commandos and NCA agents boarded the Smyrtos early Sunday as it tried to cross the English Channel. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the operation as a direct blow to Moscow’s sanctions evasion network.
Interception in the Channel
Early on Sunday, Royal Marines, specially trained National Crime Agency officers, and Royal Air Force assets intercepted the tanker Smyrtos (also reported as Smirtos) as it attempted to pass through the English Channel. The vessel was sailing under the flag of Cameroon and is suspected of belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. Boarding took place after a six-hour operation that involved close coordination with France, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
UK’s first take-down
While the interception of shadow-fleet vessels has become routine in the Baltic Sea, this is the first time the United Kingdom has undertaken such an operation directly. Previous interceptions have been carried out by other nations, but Sunday’s boarding marks an escalation in London’s enforcement of sanctions tied to the war in Ukraine.
Shadow fleet and sanctions
The UK Ministry of Defence says the shadow fleet comprises more than 700 vessels and is responsible for transporting about 75% of Russian oil that is subject to international sanctions. The United Kingdom has already sanctioned over 500 of these ships. The fleet allows Moscow to bypass oil-export restrictions and continue financing its war effort.
This successful operation deals another blow to Russia and reminds those who fuel Putin’s war in Ukraine that they have nowhere to hide.
International coordination and next steps
The tanker is now being held under guard off the south coast of England while investigations proceed. The UK authorities stressed that the enforcement action was taken in accordance with national and international law. The Russian government has not yet commented on the incident. Starmer thanked all personnel involved in what he called a decisive and lawful operation.
