Lifeboat operations suspended in Portsmouth

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) placed its Portsmouth lifeboat station off service on 10 September 2026 following threats and protests connected to Channel migrant rescues. Emergency search and rescue operations in the area, one of the busiest maritime corridors in the United Kingdom, are being maintained through contingency plans involving neighbouring flank stations and other declared maritime assets. RNLI officials stated that station closures occur periodically for maintenance or operational requirements and affirmed that emergency response capabilities remain in place. Alongside the physical closure of the facility, the Eastney station took down its public Facebook page after volunteers received intense online hostility.

Confrontations at Eastney Landing

The suspension followed events on Sunday, 6 September 2026, when two RNLI lifeboat crews assisted a dinghy carrying approximately 120 people across the English Channel to the Eastney Landing ferry port area in Portsmouth. Anti-migrant demonstrators and far-right activists gathered near the site, attempting to blockade access roads leading to the shore, which resulted in injuries to police officers on the scene. RNLI crew members also deployed into the water during the incident to ensure the safety of protesters who entered the sea.

The incident followed a separate demonstration on 5 September 2026, during which hundreds of masked protesters brought operations at the Port of Dover to a standstill. In the days following the Portsmouth rescue, protesters branded volunteer crew members traitors and intensified demonstrations across the south coast.

Disruption in Poole and national security guidance

The hostility extended to the RNLI headquarters in Poole, where demonstrators gathered and verbally assaulted volunteers, forcing the Poole Old Lifeboat Museum to close for several days. In response, the charity dismissed circulating claims that lifeboats were transporting migrants to secret locations or housing asylum seekers on RNLI property, calling the rumours completely baseless. The charity stated that its crews have operated for more than 200 years to save lives without judgment, fear, or favour.

RNLI chief executive Peter Sparkes addressed the growing abuse aimed at rescue personnel in a formal statement.

“Sadly, as a result, some of our volunteers and staff have been the subject of online and, in the worst cases, physical abuse.”

Following the incidents, the RNLI launched a review of safety protocols across all UK branches. National leadership advised volunteers that they may choose not to wear RNLI-branded clothing in public if they believe it poses a personal security risk. The charity also instructed staff and volunteers that they have the authority to close local lifeboat stations and retail shops immediately if they feel endangered.
