Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte faces lengthy absence after knee ligament injury at World Cup
Uruguay and Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a knee ligament tear during his team's 1-0 defeat to Spain at the World Cup on Friday, the club confirmed Sunday. Ugarte, 25, was stretchered off and could miss several months of action.
The injury occurred late in the first half at Guadalajara's Estadio Akron, with Ugarte twisting awkwardly while challenging Spain's Pedri moments before the decisive goal. He was carried off in visible distress, hands on his head and shirt pulled over his face. Uruguay subsequently exited the tournament, finishing third in Group H with two draws and the loss.
Medical outlook still unclear
Manchester United and the Uruguayan federation are jointly evaluating the damage. United's statement avoided specifying the ligament, leaving the timeline open.
Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.
We will continue working together through the evaluation process to later confirm the full extent and severity of the injury.
Reports from multiple sources indicate that a multi-month absence is likely. French outlet France 24 noted that Ugarte may be sidelined for several months.

A grim tournament for Uruguay
The two-time world champions failed to win any of their group matches, drawing with Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia before the Spain defeat. Outgoing coach Marcelo Bielsa said he had left nothing for Uruguayan soccer during his tenure.
Ugarte's club struggles deepen
Since joining United from PSG in a deal worth €50 million plus add-ons, Ugarte has found consistency elusive. He started only eight Premier League matches in 2025-26 and just once in United's final 16 league games. Then-head coach Ruben Amorim said in November that the midfielder must improve, acknowledging that the English top flight is a different world to Ligue 1 or Portugal. The injury now jeopardises his chance to establish himself as United return to the Champions League.
