
Uber and Wayve launch London robotaxi service with 15 supervised electric vehicles
Passengers across London can now book autonomous rides in Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve software, operating under rules requiring a licensed human safety driver behind the wheel.
Initial deployment in London
Uber began offering autonomous minicab rides in London on 3 September 2026 in partnership with British artificial intelligence developer Wayve. The initial fleet consists of 15 electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles operating under standard London private hire regulations. Each car carries a licensed, trained safety driver behind the wheel who is required to intervene if necessary. London represents the second European city to introduce commercial autonomous Uber rides, following a deployment in Zagreb earlier in 2026.
Booking process and rider experience
Passengers booking an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric journey can be matched with an autonomous vehicle whenever one is available nearby. The Uber mobile application alerts riders before dispatch, providing an option to switch to a standard human-driven car. Once matched, passengers unlock the vehicle doors and complete the entire journey via the app. Fares for autonomous trips match standard Uber rates, and riders are not prompted for tips inside the app, though gratuities can still be added via trip history. In surveys conducted by Uber, over 100,000 London app users stated they would choose an autonomous car if offered.

Sensor technology and operational strategy
The deployed Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles utilize a 73 kilowatt-hour battery and Wayve's AI Driver software. Instead of following pre-programmed route scripts, the system processes environmental conditions in real time using sensor suites mounted on the roof bar and across the exterior. Alex Kendall, chief executive of Wayve, described autonomous system development as a central technological competition of this generation.

Uber leadership stated that autonomous fleets will complement rather than replace conventional drivers during multi-year rollout phases. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, noted the long-term role of human drivers in the city.

International expansion and regulatory environment
London's deployment proceeds under existing ride-hailing licensing obtained by Uber in August 2026, while the United Kingdom develops comprehensive rules for fully driverless vehicles. BBC technology editor Zoe Kleinman identified technology, regulation, and manufacturing as the three main hurdles facing widespread deployment. In Europe, Zagreb launched the first commercial robotaxi service in April 2026 using Uber, Pony.ai, and Croatian startup Verne, while Portugal enacted a legal framework permitting public road testing this year. Globally, Alphabet's Waymo operates commercial services across 14 United States cities, while Uber maintains autonomous fleets in Dallas, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Austin, with future deployments planned for Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Tokyo with Nissan.
