Arsenal sign Greece winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m on five-year deal

Arsenal have finalised the acquisition of Greece international Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a deal worth £34m (€40m). The 24-year-old winger has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions and fills the void left by Leandro Trossard, who departed for Besiktas earlier this month.

The transfer details

Tzolis becomes Arsenal's third permanent signing of the summer window, following defender Piero Hincapié (whose loan was made permanent) and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who arrived on a free transfer from Leeds United. The deal was confirmed on Thursday and comes 48 hours after Arsenal missed out on Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea in a British-record £117m move.

Sporting director Andrea Berta described the new arrival in glowing terms.

Christos is an extremely versatile attacking player who naturally operates on the left but is comfortable across the front line. He's an excellent finisher with both feet, thrives in tight spaces, and possesses incredible technical ability.

Tzolis himself expressed pride at joining the English champions, saying it felt "absolutely amazing" to sign for such a big club. He revealed a positive hour-long conversation with manager Mikel Arteta covering the club, his own role, and the team's plans.

From Norwich cast-off to Belgian champion

Tzolis returns to England with a point to prove after an underwhelming first spell at Norwich City between 2021 and 2024, where he scored three goals in 30 appearances but failed to find the net in 14 Premier League outings. Loan spells at FC Twente and Fortuna Dusseldorf preceded his 2024 move to Club Brugge, where his career ignited.

Across two seasons in Belgium he registered 43 goals in 108 appearances, with his final campaign producing 22 goals and 29 assists in 55 matches as Brugge won the Belgian title. Only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (41 goal contributions) surpassed Tzolis's tally of 40 (17 goals, 23 assists) in the Belgian Pro League among players in Europe's top five domestic leagues.

The 34-cap Greece international (nine goals) also contributed two Champions League strikes last season: in a 2-1 group-stage defeat to Atalanta and a 3-3 knockout-phase draw against Atletico Madrid.

What he brings to Arteta's system

Analysis from The Athletic's Anantaajith Raghuraman highlights that pace, physicality, versatility, and defensive awareness have underpinned Arsenal's success under Mikel Arteta, and Tzolis checks all those boxes. His time at Fortuna Dusseldorf, where many of his 24 goals came from attacking crosses at the far post, demonstrated a player who understands timing and spatial awareness.

The New York Times notes that Tzolis's tight-window passing has improved markedly, combining with off-the-ball movement to create chances from deep positions. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard managed a combined 19 goals and 17 assists across all competitions last season, a benchmark Tzolis will be expected to exceed.

Tzolis described his own style directly.

I'm a direct player, I go for goals or assists. That's my point of view as an attacker, as a winger. I'm always hungry to score or to give the final pass to my team-mates. And I can say I work hard for the team, also in the defensive part.

The question remains whether his output, largely achieved with space in front of him in Belgium and Germany's second tier, will translate to the more congested Premier League. Arsenal faced competition for his signature from Borussia Dortmund, who viewed him as a potential successor to Barcelona-bound Karim Adeyemi, and Crystal Palace, who had a bid rejected last summer before Tzolis signed a new Brugge contract until 2029.

Context within the squad

The signing provides a boost after defender William Saliba was ruled out for an "extensive period" with a back problem that curtailed his World Cup participation, meaning the France international will miss the start of Arsenal's title defence. Arsenal also enquired about Juventus's 21-year-old Turkey international Kenan Yildiz but were told he was not available.

Tzolis's 14 previous Premier League appearances for Norwich all came during the 2021-22 relegation campaign, mostly as a teenager. His trajectory since then suggests a more mature player returning to England's top flight.
