Two men drown in separate German lake accidents on Saturday
Emergency services recovered the body of a missing 40-year-old from Waldsee in Raunheim, while a 41-year-old died at Angermunder See in Düsseldorf after a failed rescue attempt.
Raunheim incident
A 40-year-old man was reported missing by his family at the busy Waldsee beach in Raunheim (Kreis Groß-Gerau) on Saturday. The family alerted authorities after he disappeared in the water. DLRG divers later recovered his body from the lake. Police said they are treating the death as an accident and are investigating the circumstances of the drowning.
Düsseldorf incident
At Angermunder See, a gravel pit lake in Düsseldorf, a 41-year-old man drowned on the same day. Witnesses attempted to locate and rescue the man themselves but were unsuccessful. Fire service rescuers had to cut a roughly 300-metre path through dense undergrowth to reach the southern part of the lake. Divers found him underwater shortly afterward and brought him to shore. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. An emergency chaplain is available for those affected, and police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Response and investigation
Both incidents are being treated as accidents, with criminal police in Hesse and local police in Düsseldorf looking into the backgrounds of the drownings. The incidents occurred on a single Saturday at popular swimming spots in warm weather, though authorities have not commented on any link between the two events.
