Two earthquakes up to magnitude 3.5 hit Romania's Vrancea seismic zone
Two earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.9 and 3.5 struck eastern Romania overnight on 3 October 2026, originating at focal depths exceeding 136 kilometres in the Vrancea seismic zone.
Morning tremors registered in Buzău County
Romania recorded two distinct earthquakes in the Vrancea seismic zone during the early morning hours of Saturday, 3 October 2026. According to official data published by the National Institute for Research and Development for Earth Physics (INCDFP), the stronger of the two events occurred at 04:22 local time within Buzău County. The institute measured the magnitude of this main tremor at 3.5 on the Richter scale. INCDFP calculations indicated that the earthquake originated at an intermediate focal depth of 140.9 kilometres beneath the ground, representing a depth of more than 140 kilometres. Seismologists estimated the intensity of the event at grade I on the seismic intensity scale. The epicentre of the 04:22 earthquake was mapped in proximity to several Romanian urban centres, located 55 kilometres south of Focșani, 59 kilometres south of Buzău, 60 kilometres south-east of Sfântu-Gheorghe, 68 kilometres east of Brașov, and 83 kilometres north-east of Ploiești.
- A magnitude 4.5 earthquake strikes Vrancea County as the strongest in Romania in 2026.
- A magnitude 3.3 earthquake is registered in the Vrancea seismic zone.
- A magnitude 2.9 earthquake occurs in Vrancea County at a depth of 136.9 kilometres.
- A magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurs in Buzău County at a depth of 140.9 kilometres.
Earlier overnight tremor in Vrancea County
The 04:22 earthquake was preceded by an initial tremor registered less than two hours earlier in the same broader seismic region. At 02:41 local time, INCDFP monitoring stations recorded a separate earthquake measuring magnitude 2.9. This earlier event was localized within Vrancea County at a focal depth of 136.9 kilometres beneath the surface. Seismological data placed the epicentre of the 02:41 tremor 43 kilometres south of Focșani, 59 kilometres south of Buzău, 69 kilometres east of Sfântu-Gheorghe, 79 kilometres east of Brașov, and 92 kilometres north-east of Ploiești. The two events occurred less than two hours apart, with the first tremor situated in Vrancea County and the subsequent 3.5 magnitude event centered in neighbouring Buzău County. Both tremors took place at intermediate focal depths below 130 kilometres.
- 02:41 tremor (Vrancea County)
- 136.9 km
- 04:22 tremor (Buzău County)
- 140.9 km
Annual seismic patterns across the Vrancea area
The Vrancea seismic zone is recognized by the institute as one of the most active seismic regions in Romania, experiencing frequent subterranean tectonic movements. Exactly one week prior to the 3 October events, INFP monitoring systems registered an earthquake measuring magnitude 3.3 on the Richter scale in the identical area. The strongest earthquake recorded in Romania during the entire 2026 calendar year occurred on 26 February, when a magnitude 4.5 event struck Vrancea County. That February earthquake also originated within the Vrancea zone at intermediate depth. The regional monitoring network operates continuously across Vrancea and Buzău counties to track low-intensity tremors.
Emergency guidance and post-earthquake safety
Following the two overnight earthquakes on Saturday morning, the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) communicated a series of safety recommendations for the general population. Emergency management authorities emphasized the necessity of remaining calm following any earthquake event. The authorities instructed citizens to adhere strictly to post-earthquake safety measures to prevent accidents and maintain safety. The safety guidance reminds residents to verify surroundings carefully after tremors occur and follow official instructions issued by emergency services. The National Institute for Earth Physics continues regular monitoring of the Vrancea area, providing updates on tectonic activity to civil protection authorities.
