Two dead after car hits tree and burns out on Baden-Württemberg state road
A failed overtaking maneuver on a state road near Bartholomä killed a 34-year-old driver and his 43-year-old passenger late Tuesday evening, police said.
The accident
A 34-year-old man was driving on the L 1165 between Bartholomä and Steinheim am Albuch when he attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead. An oncoming car forced him to abort the maneuver, and as he pulled back into his lane he lost control of the car. The vehicle left the road to the right, struck a tree, and was thrown back onto the carriageway, coming to rest about 30 metres further on.
Fire and rescue
After the impact the car caught fire and burned out completely. Emergency services recovered the driver and his 43-year-old female passenger from the wreckage, but both had already died from their injuries. One report, from ZEIT ONLINE, described the vehicle as an electric car; the other two sources did not specify the type.
Road closure and damage
The state road remained closed until the early hours of Wednesday morning while police investigated and the wreckage was cleared. Authorities estimated the material damage at around 60,000 euros.
