Wife and son arrested in Cutro over 2024 murder of Salvatore Giglio
Italian Carabinieri arrested a 60-year-old woman and her 28-year-old son in Cutro on suspicion of killing 69-year-old Salvatore Giglio in 2024 and dumping his body into the Tacina river.
Arrests in Cutro
Carabinieri officers attached to the investigative unit of the operational department of the Crotone provincial command executed arrest warrants on the morning of 30 September 2026 in Cutro against Daniela Rossato, 60, and her son Nicola Giglio, 28. The preliminary investigations judge in Crotone ordered pre-trial detention in prison for both suspects upon a formal request submitted by the local Public Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutors coordinate the case under Public Prosecutor Domenico Guarascio, charging the mother and son with joint homicide and the concealment of a corpse. The charges stem from the death of 69-year-old Salvatore Giglio, who was Rossato's husband and Nicola's father. Authorities determined that the fatal assault took place within the domestic premises of the family home in Cutro before the suspects transported the body away from the property.
Initial report and investigative steps
The investigation commenced on 28 September 2024, when Rossato entered the Cutro Carabinieri station to report that her husband had vanished one week earlier, on 21 September. Investigators immediately noted the unusual seven-day delay in filing the missing person report. The Crotone Public Prosecutor's Office ordered extensive phone taps, room listening devices, and repetitive interrogations of family members and local acquaintances. Following months of covert surveillance and witness hearings, prosecutors formally entered Rossato and her son into the official suspects register in December 2025. Inquiries established that long-standing disputes concerning money and inheritance provided the central motive for the homicide.

Security footage and crime scene cleanup
Surveillance video recorded by an adjacent residence provided crucial physical evidence that exposed the fabrications of the suspects. Video from 21 September 2024 showed Salvatore Giglio and his wife engaged in a heated argument outside the house before entering the property together. Minutes later, Nicola Giglio appeared on camera arriving out of breath at the home, and Salvatore Giglio was never seen leaving the building again. During the night of 23 September 2024, the same security camera captured the mother and son loading what prosecutors identified as the victim's body or remains into an automobile. Court documents indicate that the suspects subsequently purchased several litres of bleach to eliminate biological evidence from the crime scene.
Fabricated accounts and river searches
During questioning, Rossato and her son offered a series of contradictory stories to justify the sudden disappearance to judicial police. They claimed Giglio, a Jehovah's Witness, had departed on an impromptu preaching journey, planned to relocate to Switzerland, or escaped secretly through a window to meet unidentified women. An anonymous letter delivered to the local station also alerted investigators, stating that the wife hated Giglio for financial reasons and urging them to scrutinise her and her younger son. Specialized Carabinieri divers from Messina and forensic investigators from the Scientific Investigation Department (RIS) conducted multiple searches along the Tacina river in the Steccato di Cutro locality. While authorities suspect the body was thrown into the river, divers have not yet recovered the remains.
