Turkey seeks arrest of Netanyahu as Israel warns against Turkish military presence in Syria

Ankara asked Interpol to issue an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu over a May 2026 Gaza flotilla raid, as Israel warned it will counter Turkish deployments in Syria.

Arrest warrant over Gaza flotilla

On 21 August 2026, the Turkish Ministry of Justice announced an international arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asked Interpol to take action. The legal proceeding forms part of an investigation into the Israeli military's interception of a humanitarian aid flotilla attempting to reach the Gaza Strip in international waters. During that operation in May 2026, Israeli naval forces intercepted approximately 50 boats in the Mediterranean Sea, west of Cyprus. Israeli forces forcibly transported around 430 crew members and activists to Israeli territory, detaining them before ordering their deportation.

Rhetorical escalation between leaders

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office responded on Friday with sharp verbal attacks against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Netanyahu characterized the warrant as an invalid maneuver and accused the Turkish government of hypocrisy, regional aggression, and internal repression.

Erdogan is an antisemitic dictator who has massacred the Kurds, supported the massacre of the terrorist organization Hamas, and oppresses his own people.

— Benjamin Netanyahu

In an additional statement, Netanyahu accused Erdogan of occupying half of Cyprus, imprisoning journalists and political opponents, and harboring Hamas operatives. Netanyahu stated that Erdogan's attempts to intimidate Israeli leaders and soldiers would fail, calling Israel the only true democracy in the Middle East. The Turkish presidency's communications directorate rejected the Israeli statements in a post on X, calling the effort to present Turkey as a security threat a petty political maneuver.

Military friction in northern Syria

The diplomatic rift followed military friction in northwestern Syria earlier in the week. On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, airstrikes targeted an airbase in Syria's Idlib province, located a few tens of kilometers from the Turkish border. The airbase had sustained heavy damage during the Syrian civil war and remained out of service. Damascus attributed the bombardment to Israel, while Netanyahu implicitly acknowledged the operation the following day. Israeli officials asserted that an official Turkish delegation had visited the site, warning that Israel would oppose any Turkish military deployment extending southward.

We will not tolerate a Turkish military entrenchment moving south, because it threatens us.

— Benjamin Netanyahu

Turkey rejected the claims, denying any troop presence at the base before or during the Tuesday attack. On Thursday, 20 August, Ankara declared that it would continue to protect Syrian territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Turkish presidency stated that it did not plan a military counterstrike, affirming that it would avoid falling into a trap set by the Israeli leadership.

Deepening diplomatic breakdown

The confrontation reflects a broader breakdown between two historical allies, shaped by diverging policies on the Palestinian territories and military operations in Syria. Ghent University international politics professor Dries Lesage evaluated the compounding disputes between Ankara and Jerusalem.

In fact, this conflict is already getting out of hand.

— Dries Lesage

While Turkish authorities pursue legal measures through Interpol regarding the May 2026 naval raid, the Israeli government maintains that it will actively counter Turkish initiatives across the region.
