Trump turns 80 with MMA cage fights on White House lawn, tying birthday to Independence 250th anniversary
President Donald Trump marked his eightieth birthday on June 14 by transforming the South Lawn into a mixed martial arts arena for 'UFC Freedom 250,' an event that blended personal celebration with the US 250th independence anniversary and drew both cheers and fierce criticism.
A birthday like no other
On June 14, 2026, Donald Trump celebrated his 80th birthday at the White House with an unprecedented mixed martial arts event, "UFC Freedom 250," organized together with Dana White, the head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The South Lawn was converted into an outdoor arena with a 600-ton steel and LED-screen structure nicknamed "The Claw," capable of seating about 4,000 to 4,500 invited guests. An additional 85,000 people watched on big screens from the Ellipse and the National Mall.
The fights and the spectacle
The main card featured seven bouts. Diego Lopes knocked out Steve Garcia in a featherweight match, and the main event pitted lightweight fighter Ilia Topuria against Justin Gaethje. Former boxer Tyson Fury and ex-footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović made appearances. The president watched from the front row next to First Lady Melania Trump and was joined by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
It's something I never would have expected, it's simply fantastic. Let's enjoy it, it will be a great encounter.
Before the fights, the evening began with a VIP reception at 19:00, and the fights started at 19:45.

Controversy and criticism
The event, which cost an estimated $60 million and was financed by the UFC, drew sharp criticism. The Public Integrity Project filed a lawsuit to block it, calling the use of public space "deeply corrupt." Protest groups like CodePink and the "No Kings" coalition demonstrated outside, erecting a mock cage to symbolize Trump and his aides. Critics pointed to the contrast with economic strains and the conflict with Iran.
Iran deal and political backdrop
The celebration took place against the backdrop of delicate negotiations with Iran. Trump claimed that a "great deal" would bring peace, but he threatened to resume military attacks if a final nuclear agreement is not reached. Talks are expected to begin Friday in Switzerland. Trump also floated the idea of the US acting as "custodians of the Middle East for 20% of the region's revenue."
There are people able to take a punch and people who are not. In life it's always better if you are able to do it.
Next steps
After the festivities, the president was scheduled to depart for the G7 in France aboard Air Force One. The overnight Russian air raid on Kyiv, which killed several people, added to the complex international context.
