In a video call interview with Corriere della Sera, Mary L. Trump, a clinical psychologist and the estranged niece of Donald Trump, delivered a scathing assessment of the US president. She described him as 'a deeply insecure man' and 'the weakest person I've ever met,' pointing to what she calls undiagnosed psychiatric disorders and a marked cognitive decline. The two have been estranged since 2017 and are locked in a $100 million legal battle.
Donald is a misogynist. He does not like women, he does not respect women. He often reserves his most pointed attacks at women.
The Meloni clash
Mary Trump linked the president's recent verbal assaults on Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni to a mix of misogyny and his own political isolation. She claimed Meloni, as a 'good NATO partner,' distanced herself after what Mary called the 'total disaster' of the war in Iran, refusing to assist Washington. That, she said, triggered a typical reaction from her uncle: projection and blame.
He is losing control of himself and of the narrative he tries to spin about himself and his competence. The only thing he can think to do is blame other people.
A deteriorating state
According to Mary Trump, the president's behaviour has worsened in his second term. She cited his inability to accept the 2020 election results and a lifelong pattern of lashing out when he feels humiliated. She noted a family history of Alzheimer's, her grandfather was diagnosed, and said her uncle is 'in a serious cognitive decline,' with conditions that 'can only get worse with time.'
He's declining physically, cognitively, psychologically, and emotionally. Iran is just the most obvious instance right now. And we see he's turned on Benjamin Netanyahu, who I think we could safely say was his closest ally.
Advice to Europe
Mary Trump reserved sharp criticism for European leaders who adopt a placating approach, singling out Mark Rutte as 'particularly horrible in this situation.' Her prescription is blunt: do not capitulate, because a weak person draws strength from appeasement. She predicted that every aspect of the president's behaviour 'will get worse in every way' as long as he remains in power.
