Political shadow over the tournament

Trump's presence was one of several political flashpoints. Before the tournament, Infantino had awarded Trump the inaugural "FIFA Peace Prize," only for Trump to order a military raid to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro a month later and join Israel in launching airstrikes against Iran. The administration's hardline border policies created entry problems: the Democratic Republic of Congo had to complete a three-week quarantine in Belgium over Ebola concerns, Swiss striker Breel Embolo faced visa delays over an eight-year-old conviction, and Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry entirely. The Iranian team was subjected to travel restrictions, and some Iranian fans faced Islamophobic chants from anti-government activists. Iran failed to advance from the group stage.

Booing history

Sunday's jeers were the latest in a series of hostile receptions for Trump at sporting events. In June 2026, he was booed at Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, where the New York Knicks lost their only game of the series. At the 2025 Super Bowl, he and his daughter Ivanka were jeered. His appearance at the World Cup final made him the first sitting US president to attend the event on home soil; in 1994, vice-president Al Gore presented the trophy instead of Bill Clinton.

A tournament of contrasts

Despite the political tensions, the football itself delivered. A total of 308 goals were scored across the expanded 48-team tournament. Cape Verde's run to the knockout stages and Norway's advance to the quarter-finals provided Cinderella stories. The top four FIFA-ranked teams reached the semi-finals.
