Cagliari forward Yael Trepy in induced coma after near-drowning in Sardinia pool
The 20-year-old French forward was pulled from a villa pool on the Costa Smeralda and flown by helicopter to Sassari, where a CT scan showed fluid in his lungs.
Pool incident on the Costa Smeralda
Yael Trepy, a 20-year-old French forward for Cagliari, nearly drowned on the afternoon of August 16 at a private villa in the Costa Smeralda area, near Porto Cervo on Sardinia's northern coast. According to an initial reconstruction of the incident, which occurred around 18:00, Trepy ended up in the deepest part of the swimming pool. He reportedly cannot swim, which caused him to lose control in the water and find himself in difficulty. He was pulled from the pool by people at the scene, but the gravity of the situation made intervention by 118, Italy's emergency medical service, necessary. Emergency responders intubated the player at the scene before transferring him by helicopter to Sassari.
La Stampa, citing several local newspapers, reported the incident occurred on Ferragosto, August 15. Other sources, referring to the event as having taken place "yesterday afternoon" relative to their August 17 publication, place it on August 16. The discrepancy has not been resolved in the available reporting.
Medical treatment in Sassari
Trepy was transported by the helicopter rescue service to the Ospedale Civile Santissima Annunziata in Sassari, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. His condition was described as serious. Medical examinations, including a thoracic CT scan, revealed a substantial accumulation of fluid in his lungs, an element that compromises regular oxygenation of the body. The decision to induce a pharmacological coma was taken by the medical team at the Sassari hospital after assessing the results of the CT scan. The coma was maintained to protect his organism, alleviate suffering, and favor the effectiveness of therapies. He remains under strict and continuous observation in the hospital's Rianimazione department, where the medical team is monitoring his condition around the clock.

The club has not indicated any change to the team's schedule in response to the incident. Trepy, who scored on his Serie A debut, is a French national playing as a forward for the Sardinian club.
