Transfer journalists Romano and Plettenberg clash publicly on X over Diomandé-to-Real Madrid report

How the dispute began

On Sunday evening, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that RB Leipzig's Yan Diomandé had completed a move to Real Madrid. Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg publicly challenged that claim on X, writing that he would not report on "a pseudo-agreement." Plettenberg also questioned why Romano had described the transfer fee as "over 100 million euros" rather than stating a precise figure. Romano responded sharply, calling Plettenberg's reporting into question and accusing him of relying on "fake news" about a supposed Manchester City bid.

Private messages made public

The exchange turned personal when Romano wrote: "Maybe I should share messages from a few years ago where you asked me: 'How can I increase my follower count?' or 'Your work is my motivation.'" Romano has 28.4 million followers on X; Plettenberg has just over 700,000.

Plettenberg added that Romano had once been a role model for many, including himself, but was no longer. Romano countered that Plettenberg had started the "circus."

Diomandé's situation at Leipzig

The 19-year-old Ivorian forward reported to Leipzig's training academy on Monday morning alongside other World Cup returnees to complete mandatory performance tests. According to dpa, Leipzig has not yet finalised any deal, with many details remaining open. The club had previously rejected a 100-million-euro offer from Liverpool during the World Cup, as well as Real Madrid's first offer at that level. Reports suggest Leipzig would deviate from their stance if an offer of at least 120 million euros arrived. Diomandé joined Leipzig a year earlier from CD Leganés for 20 million euros, making the potential profit margin significant for the club.

PSG's angry exit

Paris Saint-Germain abruptly withdrew from negotiations on Sunday evening. In a statement to Sky, the French club said the required transfer fee and salary demands were "completely disproportionate and distorting," adding that PSG would not abandon its principles of rational financial management. PSG's exit leaves Real Madrid as the only destination for Diomandé, whose representatives at Roc Nation Sports are pushing for a quick resolution. Reports indicate personal terms on a contract through 2031 have been agreed.

Both journalists are prominent figures in football transfer reporting. Plettenberg trained at the Axel Springer Academy, worked for Bild and Sport1, and now reports for Sky under the handle "Plettigoal." Romano has worked for Sky Italia, CBS Sports, and The Guardian before becoming independent. He is regarded as one of the best-connected transfer journalists in international football. The public clash between them has drawn a large audience, with the dispute raising questions about credibility and the pressure to publish first in the competitive transfer-news landscape.
