A fatal collision involving an SKM commuter train near Jozefow halted all railway traffic between Warszawa Falenica and Otwock on Friday afternoon, causing cancellations and delays across suburban lines.
Fatal collision near Jozefow
A fatal accident occurred on the railway line south-east of Warsaw on Friday, 2 October 2026, when a commuter train struck a pedestrian on the tracks. The incident took place at around 12:40 on the Szybka Kolej Miejska route connecting Pruszkow and Otwock, in the vicinity of the Jozefow railway stop. Emergency services, police officers, and railway personnel were dispatched to the scene immediately following the report. Podkomisarz Patryk Domarecki, the press officer for the District Police Commander in Otwock, stated that the collision occurred on the railway bridge between Otwock and Jozefow. Following the fatal incident, railway infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe ordered a complete suspension of train movements along the affected corridor to enable emergency services and investigators to work safely.
Complete halt in rail traffic
The accident led to an immediate shutdown of rail traffic along the entire line section between Warszawa Falenica and Otwock. The operational stoppage affected all passenger carriers operating along the otwocka route, halting both suburban trains and regional connections. Commuter rail operator Szybka Kolej Miejska issued an announcement regarding the disruption across its social media channels.
Due to an accident involving a person near the Józefów stop, a complete halt in traffic for all carriers occurred on the Warszawa Falenica to Otwock section.
The shutdown caused extensive disruptions for afternoon commuters travelling across the southern Warsaw metropolitan area. Both SKM line S1 trains and Koleje Mazowieckie line R7 trains faced schedule alterations, with selected services being cancelled, rerouted, or shortened. SKM cautioned passengers that delays on line S1 in both directions were expected to exceed 30 minutes, with delay times subject to further changes as the investigation progressed.

Replacement buses and ticket acceptance
To provide alternative transport options for stranded passengers, municipal transport authorities organized substitute road connections between the affected stations. Zarzad Transportu Miejskiego initiated the deployment of a dedicated replacement bus line designated as "Z" operating between Warszawa Falenica and Otwock. The replacement buses operated along a route connecting PKP Falenica, Patriotow, Pilsudskiego, Majowa, rondo Zaryna, Jana Pawla II, Warszawska, and PKP Otwock.
In addition to substitute buses, transit officials introduced emergency fare-sharing agreements across multiple regional rail systems starting at 13:00. Under this policy, tickets issued by Koleje Mazowieckie and ZTM were mutually honored across both zone 1 and zone 2 of the Warsaw Public Transport network until further notice. Koleje Mazowieckie also reached an agreement for mutual ticket acceptance on select PKP Intercity long-distance trains operating on the Warszawa to Lukow, Warszawa to Deblin, and Warszawa to Skierniewice corridors.
Official response and investigation
National railway infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe confirmed the activation of emergency response protocols following the fatal accident. The infrastructure operator coordinated with railway carriers to ensure substitute road transport remained available while track inspections and recovery work continued.
Carriers were advised to introduce replacement bus service.
A dedicated railway accident commission was convened alongside the police and local emergency services to clarify all circumstances surrounding the pedestrian's death on the tracks. SKM stated that it remained in close contact with PKP PLK to receive operational updates and notify passengers of any changes. PKP PLK directed travelers to its online Passenger Portal to check real-time delay numbers and revised timetables throughout the afternoon.
