PSG agree €50m deal to sign World Cup winner Ferran Torres from Barcelona

Transfer agreement reached

PSG and Barcelona have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ferran Torres for approximately €50 million. The deal was finalised the day after PSG won the European Super Cup against Aston Villa on 12 August, with El Periódico reporting that the Parisian club turned to the Torres negotiation immediately after that match. Multiple outlets confirmed the agreement on 13 August 2026, with Barcelona stating the deal involves no add-ons. Le Parisien reports Torres will sign a five-year contract, while El Periódico states four seasons. The 26-year-old had already agreed personal terms with PSG, and the clubs closed terms after PSG improved on an initial offer of around €40 million that Barcelona had rejected.

Torres did not report for training on 12 August, the Wednesday deadline for World Cup players to return from vacation, with Barcelona's permission. El Mundo reported the deal was closed on 11 August. The transfer is expected to be made official over the weekend, with Torres traveling to Paris for medical examinations.

World Cup hero seeking new challenge

Torres arrives at PSG fresh from scoring the winning goal for Spain in the 106th minute of the World Cup final against Argentina at MetLife Stadium. He was primarily used as a substitute by Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente. In an interview with NBC during a US media tour the previous week, Torres described leaving Barcelona as his "dream," citing the club's refusal to offer improved contract terms.

At PSG, Torres will reunite with Luis Enrique, who managed him during his tenure as Spain national team coach. Le Parisien notes Torres will reinforce an attack that lost Gonçalo Ramos to AC Milan earlier in the transfer window, providing an alternative to Ousmane Dembélé, whom Luis Enrique has deployed as a central striker. During PSG's Super Cup win on 12 August, another new signing, Maghnes Akliouche, started in that central role.

Barcelona's motivation to sell

Torres joined Barcelona from Manchester City in January 2022 for an initial €55m plus a further €10m in add-ons. His contract was due to expire in summer 2027. Barcelona were open to selling because any contract renewal would have triggered a payment of around €8m to Manchester City under a clause in the original transfer agreement. Barcelona sporting director Deco was reluctant to work on a new deal, according to sources cited by The New York Times.

Torres featured 49 times last season across all competitions, scoring 21 goals. The New York Times records his Barcelona totals as 65 goals and 23 assists in 207 appearances, while ABC cites 64 goals and 22 assists. He won three league titles with the club. Despite those numbers, Torres never held a guaranteed starting role and told US media he did not feel sufficiently valued by Barcelona.

Rebuilding the Barcelona attack

Barcelona have already signed England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund. Robert Lewandowski departed for the Chicago Fire in MLS, meaning Torres's exit leaves Barcelona without both of their centre-forward options. The club has targeted Atlético Madrid's Julián Alvarez, who has expressed a desire to join, but Atlético are unwilling to sanction his departure.

The €50m from Torres's sale could help unblock Barcelona's pursuit of Rodri from Manchester City. Barcelona's second offer, below €60m per ABC, remains far from the €80m that City are demanding. Rodri, who informed Real Madrid last week that he preferred a move to Barcelona, is due to report for training on 14 August after four weeks of vacation.
