Debutant Tiago Torres shocks Basilashvili, while Rocha and Silva exit Estoril Open on day one

Torres's dream debut

Tiago Torres, a 430th-ranked Portuguese who turned professional only a year ago after studying in the United States, delivered the shock of the opening day. Facing former world No. 16 Nikoloz Basilashvili, Torres fell behind 4-1 in the first set but capitalised on the Georgian's inconsistency to win 6-4, 6-2. The victory, his first at ATP level, lifts him more than 60 places in the live rankings. He will next face Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the world No. 30 and a former top-20 player.

Silva's record marathon

Frederico Silva, a 31-year-old wild card from Caldas da Rainha, played the longest match in Estoril Open history since the tournament's reorganisation, lasting three hours and 26 minutes against Frenchman Luca van Assche. Silva, playing his first ATP main-draw match in over five years, was granted a wild card by the organisers. Ranked 235, he lost 7-5, 6-7(4-7), 6-1. He recovered from an early break in the first set and led 4-1 in the second before van Assche forced a tiebreak. Silva won the tiebreak but faded in the decider, dropping serve twice. Van Assche, the world No. 78 and a three-time Challenger winner in 2026, will meet the winner of Vilius Gaubas and Pablo Carreño Busta, the 2017 champion.

Rocha's night battle ends in defeat

Henrique Rocha, Portugal's No. 2, lost his third consecutive first-round match at the Estoril Open, falling to Spain's Pedro Martinez 7-5, 7-5 in a match that began at 8 p.m. under floodlights. Rocha, ranked 123, saved 11 of 14 break points and four match points, breaking back to level at 5-5 in the second set, but Martinez, a 2024 finalist and former world No. 36 who came through qualifying, held firm. Rocha, who won Challenger titles in Brasília and Perugia this season, remains without a main-draw win at his home tournament.

It's always a very special tournament for me. I love playing here. Unfortunately, I still haven't managed my first win in the main draw and that makes me sad, but I'm sure it will come. Pedro is a very experienced player, he came from qualifying, he was a bit more match-tough than me and I think that ended up helping.

Top seed falls

In another upset, Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli, the seventh seed and world No. 69, was eliminated by French qualifier Titouan Droguet, ranked 114. The score was not fully reported, but the result removes the first seeded player from the draw.

What's next

Three more Portuguese players await their opening matches on Tuesday: Nuno Borges, Jaime Faria, and Tiago Pereira. Martinez advances to face second seed Luciano Darderi of Italy, while Torres takes on Tabilo.
