Goals before the break
Ferencváros took the lead in the 20th minute at the Groupama Arena in Budapest, when Bamidele Yusuf finished after Torreense lost possession in a dangerous area. Torreense replied three minutes later, in the 23rd minute, as Manu Pozo struck an acrobatic shot after a cross from Vázquez. Pozo had another clear chance before the interval, while Ferencváros full-back O'Dowda came close without finding the target. The sides went into the interval level at 1-1.
Second-half goals and a late collapse
Torreense pushed after the restart and held the hosts for around 10 minutes, but struggled to find quality on the counterattack. Mariano Gómez, an Argentine centre-back, put Ferencváros back in front in the 58th minute with a header from a corner taken by Veljko Birmancevic. Zohoré came close to scoring from a set piece in the 70th minute, and Luís Tralhão had also made two more changes. The decisive blow came in the 80th minute, when Torreense defender Mohamed Ali Diadié turned the ball into his own net while trying to prevent a goal by Maïga from an O'Dowda cross from the left. Joseph then found Lisztes late in the game for the fourth goal, a moment of collective lapse. Most reports give the final score as 4-1, although one SIC Notícias report prints 3-1 in its closing paragraph.
A first European campaign for Torreense
Torreense, 15th in Portugal's Segunda Liga, is making its first appearance in Europe. The club opened its Europa League campaign with a win over Lillestrom and now has three points from three matches, having lost its last two. Before the trip, Carlos Simões, Luís Tralhão's assistant coach, spoke at the pre-match press conference.
“We know Ferencváros is a great team. Over the last eight years they have been Hungarian champions seven times.”
He said the squad planned to keep doing what it had done, which was to compete. Torreense has won only once in seven league matches this season. Its next match is at home against Ararat-Armenia, who lost 4-0 at AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, 22 October.
Ferencváros and the rest of the day
Ferencváros is on nine points after three matches. SAPO reported that it and Bayer Leverkusen were the only sides with three wins from three after the afternoon's games. Bayer Leverkusen beat OFI 2-0, with Afonso Moreira providing the assist for the opening goal. Elsewhere, Juventus drew 2-2 with Rennes, Sunderland drew 1-1 at Lech Poznan, and Marseille lost 1-0 at Sturm Graz. AZ Alkmaar beat Ararat-Armenia 4-0, and Royal Union SG beat Hapoel Beer Sheva 4-0.
