Play came to an unexpected halt at PayPal Park on Saturday night when a toddler wandered onto the pitch during second-half stoppage time. The incident occurred during the final minutes of a Major League Soccer match between the San Jose Earthquakes and visiting Minnesota United. The young child slipped away from the sideline seating area and walked out toward midfield while play was active. Match officials paused the game immediately once the child entered the field of play.

Unlike typical pitch invasions by adult spectators, the young boy did not run across the grass or attempt to approach individual players for photographs. A stadium security staff member quickly walked onto the field, picked up the child without any resistance, and carried him safely off the turf. The boy was returned directly to a woman seated along the sideline. During the live match coverage on Apple TV, commentator Kyndra de St. Aubin broke away from the play-by-play commentary to alert viewers as the referee halted the action.

The sporting contest was effectively decided long before the interruption occurred in added time. San Jose forward Timo Werner opened the scoring in the fourth minute by converting a penalty kick, but Minnesota United took control of the fixture, scoring five goals to secure a 5-1 away win. Players on both sides waited calmly during the brief pause without showing frustration.

Minnesota United head coach Cameron Knowles addressed the moment during his post-match press conference. Knowles explained that the technical staff initially looked around after hearing sudden noise from the stands, before realizing that a young child had made his way onto the grass.

League officials responded to the stoppage on social media, describing the event as a cute interruption. The social media team for Minnesota United also referenced the toddler's appearance following the 5-1 victory, posting on X that winning the match had been like taking money from a baby.

The stoppage at PayPal Park represents the third documented time since 2021 that a toddler has entered the field of play during a Major League Soccer match. On June 7, 2025, a toddler got close to active play during a fixture between D.C. United and the Chicago Fire in Washington, D.C., before stadium security personnel stepped in and carried the child away to safety.

A similar scene unfolded in 2021 during a match between FC Cincinnati and Orlando City FC. In that instance, Ohio mother Morgan Tucker noticed that her two-year-old son, Zaydek, had slipped away and sprinted across the touchline onto the field. Tucker chased after him, executed a sliding tackle on the turf to catch him, and carried him off the pitch while match play continued around them.
