Iris Tió wins two artistic swimming silvers on one day at European Championships in Paris

Mixed duet free final

The Spanish pairing of Iris Tió and Dennis González delivered a clean routine set to Led Zeppelin's 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' at the Olympic Aquatic Centre. They posted 257.9733 points (95.0233 in elements, 162.9500 in artistic impression) and did not receive any base mark penalty. It was the highest artistic impression score of the final and enough to top the standings with only three duos left to perform.

Great Britain's Isabelle Thorpe and Ranjuo Tomblin followed with a more difficult programme. Their score of 258.2383 (112.2883 elements, 145.9500 impression) pushed them into first place by 0.265 points. The British pair had initially been flagged with a base mark, but the review panel lifted it, leaving their lead intact. Italy's Filippo Pelati and Lucrezia Ruggiero took bronze with 255.1641. Russia's Nab Trofimov and Alina Rumiantseva, who attempted the highest declared difficulty, suffered a penalty on one element and ended fourth.

Women's solo free preliminaries

Earlier in the day, Tió also competed in the preliminary round of the women's solo free event. Performing to Édith Piaf's 'Hymne à l'amour', she earned 276.4849 points (133.7849 elements, 142.7000 impression). That placed her second, 10 points behind Belarus's Vasilina Khandoshka (287.3999). Germany's Klara Bleyer was third with 271.6687. The final is scheduled for Monday at 9:00 local time.

Women's duet free final

Less than two hours after her mixed duet medal, Tió joined Lilou Lluis for the women's duet free final. They executed a high-risk opening acrobatic element that no other pair had attempted, and although the judges briefly flagged it for review, no penalty was applied. Their total of 315.6442 points, built on a standout artistic impression, was beaten only by Greece's Alexandri sisters, who presented the most difficult routine of the session and scored 316.3315. Russia placed third with 310.4407, showing competitive form despite not having raced internationally for three years, but Spain held a clear edge in artistic impression.

A day of relief and recompense

Both Tió and González had endured a difficult opening day on Friday. Tió and Lluis finished eighth in the duet technical after a base mark on their first mandatory element, while González, the reigning world champion, placed fourth in the men's solo technical, just 0.4 points from bronze, in his first competition since shoulder surgery. The operation, according to the team, could have ended his career. He had also been managing an ear issue in the weeks before Paris, and the pair had only two weeks of full training together. For that reason, coach Andrea Fuentes deliberately lowered the difficulty of the mixed duet routine, a decision that left them vulnerable to the British challenge but ensured a clean execution. The two silvers on Saturday lifted the mood of the Spanish delegation and put their first medals on the board at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships.
