Three convicted murderers were put to death by lethal injection on Thursday, 13 August 2026, in the US states of Oklahoma, Tennessee and Alabama. Jeremy W., aged 42, was executed in Alabama on Thursday evening local time. He had been sentenced to death for the kidnapping, rape and murder of a five-year-old girl, a case that had triggered a large-scale search operation when the child disappeared.

Death penalty landscape
According to the non-profit Death Penalty Information Center, the death penalty is legal in more than two dozen of the 50 US states, though several no longer carry out executions in practice. Nationwide, 47 people were executed in 2025. Beyond lethal injection, executions in the United States are also carried out by electric chair or, more rarely, by firing squad.
The Death Penalty Information Center reports that at least nine further executions are scheduled for the current year, with the next one set for Tuesday, 18 August.
Public opinion
A recent representative survey by the Pew Research Center found that two-thirds of US adults (66%) support the death penalty for people convicted of murder. At the same time, a majority (59%) believe the death penalty does not have a deterrent effect on serious crime.
