Collision on the Markerwaarddijk

A fatal road traffic collision occurred late Saturday evening, 29 August 2026, on the dike route connecting Lelystad and Enkhuizen in the province of Flevoland. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the Houtribdijk, also known as the Markerwaarddijk and numbered provincially as the N307, around 22:45. While early police notices indicated a collision involving two cars, subsequent statements confirmed that three passenger vehicles were involved. Police investigators stated that two of the vehicles are suspected of having collided head-on at high impact. The collision left vehicle debris strewn across the full width of the roadway. Two of the three vehicles sustained extensive structural damage, and one vehicle overturned onto its side before stopping against the highway guardrail.

Casualties and victim identification

Eight individuals in total were travelling inside the three vehicles when the collision occurred on the dike. The accident resulted in three deaths and left the remaining five occupants with injuries. On Sunday, 30 August, police confirmed that all three fatalities were teenagers. The victims were identified as a 17-year-old youth from Groesbeek, a 17-year-old youth from Oisterwijk in North Brabant, and a 19-year-old man from Delft. Police officials stated that additional details regarding the identities and conditions of the five injured individuals are being withheld. Furthermore, investigators noted that it has not yet been determined whether the three teenagers who died were travelling together inside a single vehicle or distributed across the cars involved.

Emergency deployment and road closure

Emergency services were dispatched in large numbers following reports of the severe collision on the N307. The response included multiple ambulances, fire department rescue units, and a specialized trauma helicopter carrying medical personnel to the dike. Fire crews used heavy equipment to extricate several injured occupants who were trapped inside the damaged vehicle frames. Medical personnel from the trauma helicopter assisted ground paramedic teams in treating the injured before their transport to nearby medical facilities. To allow emergency teams to work and to enable forensic collision investigators to examine the site, the Houtribdijk was closed to all traffic in both directions throughout the night. After wreckage clearance and police measurements concluded, the dike was reopened to traffic on Sunday morning.

Official response and ongoing inquiry

Following the announcement of the casualties, local municipal leadership issued condolences to the families of the victims and the survivors. Mieke Baltus, the mayor of Lelystad, addressed the community and emergency personnel in a statement on Sunday.
