Three dead after light aircraft crashes into mountain face near Leukerbad in Swiss Alps

A Cirrus SR22T flying from Lugano to Buochs crashed near Fluhalp shortly after a stopover in Sion, killing all three occupants. Swiss federal safety authorities and cantonal police have opened investigations into the cause.

Flight route and impact

A single-engine Cirrus SR22T light aircraft collided with a mountain face in the Swiss Alps on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of all three people on board. The flight originated at Lugano Airport in the southern canton of Ticino and conducted an intermediate stopover at Sion Airport in the canton of Valais. After completing the stopover in the Valais cantonal capital, the plane took off again to continue its planned journey north toward the Buochs aerodrome in the central canton of Nidwalden.

Shortly after 16:00, the aircraft crashed against the northern rock face in the Fluhalp sector within the municipality of Leukerbad (Loèche-les-Bains). The impact site is situated near the Balmhorn mountain along the border between the cantons of Valais and Bern. The Valais Cantonal Police confirmed the crash and fatalities in an official statement on Wednesday afternoon.

For reasons that remain to be determined, the aircraft collided with the northern slope in the Fluhalp sector.

Emergency deployment at Fluhalp

Local residents and witnesses in the Leukerbad area alerted emergency services after observing heavy smoke rising from the alpine rock face. The alert prompted a mobilization coordinated by the Cantonal Valais Rescue Organisation (OCVS 144), which brought together search teams, firefighters, and police investigators from Valais as well as units from neighbouring cantons.

First responders arrived at the high-altitude terrain using three rescue helicopters carrying two alpine rescue specialists. Upon reaching the wreckage on the Flüealp slopes, medical personnel determined that the three occupants had sustained fatal injuries on impact. The steep terrain required specialized aviation assets to secure the crash area and ferry technical experts to the mountain wall.

Safety and judicial investigations

Two parallel, coordinated investigations were opened on Wednesday to determine the cause of the fatal crash and establish the sequence of events. The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB), the federal agency responsible for investigating accidents across the aviation, railway, and maritime sectors, initiated a technical safety inquiry into the wreckage and flight operations.

Simultaneously, the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland opened a criminal inquiry in close coordination with the Valais Cantonal Police. Investigators are examining radar records from the flight between Sion and Buochs, atmospheric conditions around the Balmhorn massif, and mechanical components from the single-engine Cirrus SR22T to clarify why the aircraft veered into the rock face.

Identification and recovery procedures

Cantonal authorities confirmed that formal identification of the three deceased occupants was still taking place on Wednesday afternoon. Police forensic specialists and cantonal coroners are working through formal verification procedures before releasing identity details or notifying next of kin.

Search teams and accident investigators continue to document the crash site along the northern face of Fluhalp to recover remaining aircraft debris. The evidence collected from the Leukerbad mountainside will feed into the joint reporting process between federal safety officials and cantonal law enforcement.
