Montreal shooting leaves 3 dead, including police officer and suspect
A gunman opened fire in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal on Monday afternoon, killing a police officer and a civilian before being shot dead by responding officers. One other officer was injured.
What happened
On the afternoon of Monday, 22 June 2026, multiple shots were fired in the Côte-des-Neiges district of Montreal, an area with a Jewish community. The incident triggered a large-scale police operation that began at 11:35 local time (18:35 Greece time) and was still active hours later, according to the police.
Witnesses reported hearing around 20 shots. Unverified early accounts described at least two people lying motionless at the scene. Police later confirmed that the suspected gunman had been “neutralised” and that two officers and one civilian had been hit.
Casualties
By late afternoon, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) announced three deaths: a male police officer, a male civilian, and the male suspect. A female police officer was also wounded; her condition was not immediately disclosed. Earlier local media reports had mentioned two injured officers, one with a head wound and the other with a hand wound.

Police response
Officers rushed to the scene after the first shots were heard, cordoning off the area roughly bounded by Côte-des-Neiges Road, MacDonald Avenue, Highway 40, and Queen Mary Road. An emergency alert was issued shortly after 12:30 p.m., warning residents that an “armed and dangerous” suspect was at large.
Residents were told to stay indoors, lock their doors, stay away from windows, and follow the instructions of local authorities. The alert also urged people to avoid the area around De Courtrai and Trans Island avenues.
Lockdown and area impact
The Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood, which includes a historically Jewish quarter, remained under heavy police presence throughout the afternoon. The investigation was still underway, and officers asked the public to avoid the perimeter to facilitate the operation and ensure public safety.
No motive for the attack had been released by the authorities, and the police had not yet provided details about the circumstances that led to the shooting.
