Greek community president, brother and firefighter arrested for seven arsons in Messinia extortion scheme
A community president, his brother and a five-year firefighter were arrested on 18 July after a two-year investigation into seven deliberate fires in Metamorfosi, Messinia, linked to an irrigation water extortion racket.
The arrests
On 18 July 2026, three men were arrested in Metamorfosi, Messinia, after a two-year investigation by the Fire Service's Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE). The suspects are a 52-year-old community president, his 44-year-old brother, and a 66-year-old firefighter serving a five-year term. Arrest warrants were executed simultaneously with house searches, assisted by a police special operations team (OPKE) from the Messinia Police Directorate. The suspects were brought before the competent judicial authority later the same day.
The alleged crimes
The three are accused of seven deliberate fires: three forest fires and four agricultural fires, set between 2015 and 2025, though some sources narrow the arsons to 2024-2025. They also face charges of extortion, attempted extortion, aggravated damage, and theft, committed repeatedly and in concert over a decade. A fourth individual, a farmer, faces misdemeanor charges in the same case. The fires were concentrated in the local community of Metamorfosi and showed common characteristics in method, frequency, spatial concentration, and ignition pattern.
The irrigation water racket
According to the investigation, the suspects controlled the distribution of irrigation water in the area. They allegedly demanded up to 100 euros from farmers to direct water to their fields. Those who refused became targets: their olive groves or other crops were set on fire, with flames spreading to forested areas. The group is also accused of destroying or stealing agricultural equipment and produce, and of coercing farmers into transferring or leasing land to them so they could claim agricultural subsidies.
The investigation
The DAEE probe, conducted with investigators from the Gargalianoi Fire Service, lasted about two years. It examined multiple fires that shared common characteristics. Evidence included witness testimonies, incident histories, intelligence material, and data from special investigative acts, including lawful communications surveillance and technical monitoring of the suspects. The case file was submitted to the prosecutor, and arrest warrants were issued with the consent of both the prosecutor and the investigating judge.

What happens next
The suspects were brought before the judicial authority on the day of their arrest. The investigation remains open as authorities examine the full extent of the decade-long activity, including possible links to subsidy fraud. The Fire Service stated that the evaluation of all evidence revealed serious indications of the involvement of specific individuals in causing the fires under investigation.
