Thai police arrest Buddhist abbot over 100 million baht temple embezzlement and breach of celibacy

Arrest and embezzlement charges

Thai law enforcement authorities arrested 66-year-old Buddhist monk Phra Wachirayan Wi on Friday, 11 September 2026, on suspicion of embezzling 100 million baht (approximately 3 million dollars) from his monastery. Investigators state that the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan, a 14th-century temple complex in the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, withheld donations on more than 20 separate occasions over a two-year span. The legal charges against him include embezzlement and money laundering. Following the arrest, monastic authorities defrocked Phra Wachirayan Wi, removing him from the order. In Thailand, Buddhist monks take strict vows of celibacy and renounce personal material possessions. As of Saturday, neither the former abbot nor his alleged accomplice has made any public statements regarding the allegations.

Investigation of diverted temple donations

The criminal investigation opened in mid-July 2026 after law enforcement received an anonymous tip regarding the suspected misuse of monastery finances. Investigators identified two separate funding streams linked to official donation receipts that Phra Wachirayan Wi had issued under the temple's name. The first stream consisted of funds given by patrons for extensive structural renovations at the historic site, while the second came from payments for consecrated amulets and other sacred artefacts. According to police reports, none of the money collected through either channel ever reached the official bank accounts of Wat Phutthaisawan.

Lead police investigator Pattanasak Bupphasuwan outlined the financial findings during a press conference following the detention.

But the money from both streams did not enter the temple's account. Not a single baht.

Residential raids and evidence seized

On Thursday, 10 September 2026, police units executed a search warrant at the residence of Phra Wachirayan Wi, where they discovered large quantities of cash and gold bars valued at over 100 million baht. The volume of physical cash and bullion was so substantial that counting operations continued late into the night. While reviewing closed-circuit television recordings stored in the residence, officers found video footage showing the monk engaging in sexual relations with a woman on his dining table. Across the wider operation, authorities seized assets valued at roughly 5.6 million euros, including 16 kilograms of gold bars, assorted jewellery, and 28 land title deeds, while working to determine which items belong to the temple.

Accomplice arrest and broader scrutiny

Officers identified the woman in the video as 47-year-old Punyavee Rungrueang and arrested her for abetting a state official in illicit acts, a legal category applied because Thai monks receive state stipends. A subsequent raid on her private residence uncovered 35 gold amulets alongside roughly 1.5 kilograms of gold bars and jewellery, with a total estimated value of 6.04 million baht (around 185,000 dollars). Police investigators found that tens of millions of baht passed through her bank accounts each year. Phra Wachirayan Wi was widely known for producing coin amulets, with pieces owned by prominent figures including Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. His temple drew followers from among government officials, police commanders, military personnel, and business leaders, and police indicated that two or three additional suspects remain under investigation.
