Texas executes Jamaal Howard with pentobarbital following failed Tennessee lethal injection
Prison officials declared the 46-year-old dead at Huntsville penitentiary after courts rejected appeals citing intellectual disability and Tennessee's botched execution of Christa Pike.
Lethal injection in Huntsville
Texas correctional authorities executed 46-year-old death row inmate Jamaal Howard by lethal injection on Wednesday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. Howard was officially declared dead at 20:03 local time, 19 minutes after medical staff began administering a lethal dose of pentobarbital. As the chemical took effect to suppress his respiratory system, Howard took a couple of breaths, gasped, and made snoring and coughing sounds that steadily faded in volume. All physical movement ceased within approximately 30 seconds of the drug entering his veins. The procedure was the first capital execution carried out in the United States since a failed attempt occurred in Tennessee one week earlier.

Final statement to the victim's family
Before the execution team administered the lethal dose, the prison warden asked Howard if he had any final words to deliver. Howard directed his remarks toward the observation window, looking toward relatives of his victim who stood a few feet from the death chamber. Speaking through the glass partition, he offered an apology directly to the family members and asked whether they might reconcile with his past actions.
I hope you will accept my apology and I ask for your forgiveness. I am sorry for what happened. I hope you can learn to forgive me one day.
Howard also thanked his personal friends and family members, telling them that he loved them as they watched the proceedings. He added that he felt at peace and ready to meet God, wishing goodwill to those in attendance. Howard closed his final statement by telling the witnesses to enjoy life and wishing peace to everyone present.
Legal challenges and the Tennessee precedent
Howard's defense attorneys attempted until the final hours to halt the execution through emergency motions in state and federal courts. His legal team submitted an appeal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals challenging the execution protocol, while separately petitioning the US Supreme Court for an immediate stay of execution. The attorneys argued that Howard suffered from an intellectual disability that barred his execution under constitutional standards. They further contended that executing him with pentobarbital posed severe medical risks, citing the case of 50-year-old Christa Pike in Tennessee on 30 September 2026. Pike survived two sequential doses of pentobarbital, lay unconscious in a hospital bed for nearly six days while attorneys feared brain death, and only regained consciousness on 6 October 2026. The US Supreme Court denied Howard's petition on Wednesday evening without providing an explanation, clearing the way for the lethal injection.
The 2000 robbery and capital punishment totals
Howard was condemned to death for the 2000 fatal shooting of 42-year-old store clerk Vickie Swartout during an armed robbery in Silsbee, Texas. Howard was 20 years old when he committed the robbery, taking 114 dollars in cash and a carton of cigarettes from the convenience store. The incident was recorded by the business's surveillance cameras, which captured the homicide and served as key evidence in his subsequent prosecution. Howard's lethal injection was the 30th execution completed in the United States in 2026. Texas accounts for seven of those executions so far in 2026, and state correctional authorities have scheduled two more inmates to be executed before the close of the calendar year.
