Ter Stegen joins Ajax on loan from Barcelona as Germany keeper seeks career revival
The 34-year-old, whose Barcelona career stalled after injury and loss of captaincy, reunites with coach Míchel Sánchez at the Amsterdam club and aims to impress new Germany coach Jürgen Klopp.
The loan deal
Ajax announced the transfer on Tuesday, 4 August, with ter Stegen arriving on a one-season loan that runs until 30 July 2027. The German international leaves Barcelona after 423 appearances and 17 trophies over 12 years, including the 2015 Champions League and seven La Liga titles. He is the foreign player with the second-most games for the Catalan club, behind only Lionel Messi.

Injury struggles and loss of status
Ter Stegen suffered a complete rupture of the right patellar tendon in September 2024, which kept him out for nearly eight months. He then lost the Barcelona captaincy in the summer of 2025 and found first-team opportunities limited under coach Hansi Flick. A loan move to Girona in January 2026 produced only two appearances before a hamstring injury curtailed his involvement. The goalkeeper was left out of Germany's 2026 World Cup squad, which exited in the round of 32 against Paraguay under Julian Nagelsmann.

Ajax's busy summer
Ter Stegen is the latest in a series of new arrivals at Ajax, who are rebuilding after finishing fifth in the Eredivisie last season. Julian Brandt, the 30-year-old German attacking midfielder, signed a three-year deal as a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund. Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo moved from Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal for just under €20 million on a five-year contract. Dutch media reported that ter Stegen, Brandt and Arokodare could be available for the Conference League qualifier against Irish side Shelbourne.
National team ambitions
With Jürgen Klopp having recently taken over as Germany coach, ter Stegen sees the move as an opportunity to earn a recall. He last played for the national team in June 2025 at the Nations League finals, his 44th cap. He had served as understudy to Manuel Neuer at three World Cups and was not selected for the 2026 tournament. The Ajax switch reunites ter Stegen with Míchel Sánchez, who coached him at Girona last season and is now in charge in Amsterdam. A return to consistent performances in the Eredivisie and European competition could re-open the door to the national setup.
