St. Pauli hold Energie Cottbus to 1:1 draw after early Ando dismissal
Martijn Kaars scored an 80th-minute header to earn ten-man FC St. Pauli a 1:1 draw against Energie Cottbus in the 2. Bundesliga, cancelling out Justin Butler's first-half goal after Tomoya Ando was sent off.
Early dismissal reshapes the contest
FC St. Pauli travelled to face FC Energie Cottbus in the 2. Bundesliga following a victory against VfL Wolfsburg on the previous matchday. Head coach Marcel Rapp made a single change to the lineup that won against Wolfsburg, giving central defender Tomoya Ando the starting role ahead of Lars Ritzka. St. Pauli controlled the opening phase and registered the first notable attempt when Connor Metcalfe tested Cottbus with a long-range shot in the 14th minute. Second-half shifts and St. Pauli equalizer
During the second half, Energie Cottbus shifted to managing their one-goal advantage and reduced their attacking tempo, allowing St. Pauli additional space across midfield. Despite their deficit in personnel, the visitors pushed forward with greater frequency, although Cottbus limited their clear openings inside the penalty box. Cottbus came close to extending their advantage in the 69th minute when an errant clearance from Voll allowed right-back Henry Rorig to break through on goal, but the goalkeeper recovered to block Rorig's shot. Rapp introduced attacking substitutes Ricky-Jade Jones and Martijn Kaars in the 75th minute to revive the offense. Five minutes after entering the pitch, Jones created space on the wing and crossed toward Kaars, who scored with a header from five metres out in the 80th minute to make it 1:1.
Late pressure and league standings
The late equalizer produced a frantic final stretch as Cottbus pushed forward to reclaim the advantage before full time. The home side generated another dangerous chance in the 85th minute through a King Manu header, but Voll saved again to preserve the level scoreline. The 1:1 draw keeps Cottbus unbeaten in three consecutive league matches, giving the newly promoted club eight points from their first six games. St. Pauli, who suffered relegation from the Bundesliga at the end of the previous season, hold seven points from six matches with one victory, remaining one point behind Cottbus in the 2.
