Spain detains 10 drug traffickers and seizes 5.9 tonnes of hashish after boat shootout off Huelva
Spanish security forces detained ten suspected drug traffickers and seized 5,926 kilograms of hashish following a nighttime shootout with a maritime patrol boat off the coast of Huelva.
Nighttime confrontation at sea
Spanish security forces arrested ten members of a narcotics trafficking network following an armed clash off the coast of Huelva. The incident began during the night between 17 and 18 August 2026, when a patrol boat from the Provincial Maritime Service of the Guardia Civil joined a Customs Surveillance Service vessel from the Tax Agency to intercept a suspicious rigid-hulled inflatable boat. As the patrol craft closed in, the occupants of the smuggling boat executed high-speed evasive turns and sudden zig-zags. Officers reported that these maneuvers placed law enforcement personnel in severe danger, resembling previous evasion tactics that caused the deaths of two maritime officers in Huelva months earlier. During the chase, the crew jettisoned part of their drug cargo into the sea to reduce vessel weight, increase their speed, and create navigational hazards for the pursuing patrol boats.
Gunfire and patrol boat breakdown
The confrontation escalated when the occupants of the speedboat drew firearms and opened fire directly on the Guardia Civil vessel. Officers on board returned fire to repel the attack and protect their crew during the exchange of bullets. One of the suspects on board the smuggling craft was struck by gunfire during the shooting. The smuggling boat managed to break away and escape when the Guardia Civil patrol craft suffered a mechanical breakdown caused during the chase. In response, maritime and aerial units established a specialized search grid across regional waters to trace the fleeing vessel, recover the dumped cargo, and detect secondary support vessels sent to assist the smugglers.
The operation delivered an important blow to one of the criminal organizations operating in the south of the peninsula.
- Suspects open fire on Guardia Civil patrol boat off Huelva before escaping due to patrol craft breakdown.
- Security forces execute assault at sea, capturing nine crew members and two speedboats.
- Tenth suspect with gunshot injuries is detained on the Cadiz coast and transferred to Puerto Real hospital.
- Guardia Civil and Tax Agency announce the seizure of 5,926 kilograms of hashish and ten total arrests.
High-seas interception and contraband seizure
The search concluded within 48 hours when surveillance assets spotted the original speedboat in open waters on the morning of 20 August 2026. A second speedboat had met the craft in open water to provide logistical assistance. Tactical teams launched a coordinated assault against both vessels simultaneously, intercepting the craft and arresting nine crew members. In total, authorities seized two speedboats and confiscated 5,926 kilograms of hashish recovered during the operation and from the water. The Guardia Civil and the Tax Agency published details of the joint operation on Saturday, 22 August 2026.

Hospitalization of wounded suspect and wider investigation
In a connected action on land, officers located and detained the tenth member of the smuggling group along the coast of Cadiz. His accomplices had abandoned him on the shoreline after he suffered bullet wounds during the initial firefight off Huelva. Emergency medical services moved the injured detainee to the hospital in Puerto Real for treatment while remaining under police custody. The joint investigation remains open as judicial authorities work to establish individual criminal liability for the armed assault and determine whether additional accomplices assisted the smuggling network. The incident occurred during heightened regional security concerns, following an attack in Isla Cristina where two women and a minor were shot dead in a suspected drug-clan dispute, alongside warnings from the AUGC officers association regarding operational resources.
